NICE Robus RB600 at a glance
NICE Robus is a range of irreversible electromechanical geared drives for sliding gates. They are supplied with a built-in (but removable) NICE RBA3R10 control unit with an SM connector for external receivers radio signal NICE SMXI, or NICE OXI. Electrical wiring for external devices (photocells, warning light, etc.) have been simplified across the NICE Robus sliding gate drive range by using BlueBUS, which allows multiple devices to be connected to a shared connector using just one two-core cable, without even needing to observe polarity. Automatic operation depends on the power supply, but if there is a power outage, the geared motor can of course be released using the special release key so the gate can be operated manually. It is also possible to purchase an optional NICE PS124 backup battery, which allows the gate drive to continue operating during a power outage.
Choosing a drive—is the NICE Robus RB600 suitable for my gate?
Every gate has its own size (and therefore leverage) and weight (and therefore the force exerted by its weight) and every drive has its limits. The NICE Robus RB600 drive is suitable for gates with the following leaf lengths and weights:
| Cycles per hour Consecutive cycles |

In principle gate leaf length determines the maximum number of cycles per hour as well as consecutive cycles, i.e. it specifies how long the operator can remain in operation. A greater weight further reduces the number of these cycles as a percentage, due to the greater strain on the operator, and also determines the maximum permitted speed under the given load. The operator is equipped with a device (thermal cut-out), which measures both the motor temperature and the ambient temperature, and reduces the number of possible cycles accordingly.
NICE Robus RB600 operator limits
The values shown are those recommended by the manufacturer, NICE. Based on our experience, we recommend keeping a reserve of approx. 80% of the stated values:
| Maximum | Recommended | |
|---|---|---|
| Gate leaf length | 8 m | 6.5 m |
| Gate leaf weight | 600 kg | 500 kg |
Using the operator at maximum capacity, however, reduces its service life — see the estimated calculation of the operator's service life depending on stress factors:
NICE Robus RB600 operator service life
In the following table, add up the stress indices for the gate leaf weight and length, then add the indices for other factors, if applicable. Then use the graph to determine the operator's service life, expressed as the number of cycles.
Example: I have a gate with a clear opening of 4.5 m and a structure with infill weighing up to 200 kg (a standard gate). I calculate the gate leaf length index as approx. 15 + the gate weight index of 10 +, to be on the safe side, a low-temperature index of 10 because we have harsh winters, giving me a total index of 35. The graph shows that the operator's service life is approximately 120,000 cycles. At 10 operations per day, this corresponds to a service life of approximately 32 years.
| Properties of the complete automation system | Index | Service life graph |
|---|---|---|
| Gate leaf weight |
The recommended maximum total index is up to 75%. (i.e. 40,000 cycles, which at a typical operating rate of 10 cycles/day equals 10 years)

Installing the NICE Robus RB600 operator
The installation method for the operator is different for track sliding gate and cantilever sliding gate is different. For a track sliding gate, the operator is generally mounted at ground level; for a cantilever gate, it needs to be operators raised using, for example, threaded rods (Ø8 threaded rod), a DIY mounting bracket, a concrete plinth, etc. The key factor is the height of the rack, which should ideally mesh with the operator's pinion; see Rack and its stop.
Wiring
A typical (optional) wiring layout for the operator and accessories looks as follows:

Gear rack and its end stop
The gate moves by transferring the rotary torque of the drive pinion into linear motion through the rack-and-pinion mechanism on the drive gear rack. The two most commonly used types of gear rack are:
|
Nylon rack (possibly with steel reinforcement) – attaches to the gate with self-tapping screws through the eyelets. Ideal for relatively lighter and shorter gates. The steel pinion and nylon rack mesh quietly. |
|
|
Steel rack – attaches to the gate by welding on threaded brackets, then screwing the rack into them. Used for longer and heavier gates. The steel pinion rubbing against the steel rack makes operation slightly noisier. |
It is essential that the drive pinion module is compatible with the gear rack module. The drive NICE Robus RB600 has a tooth module of 4.
The drive detects the open and closed end positions using end stops mounted on the gear rack:
Wiring the NICE Robus RB600 drive
Before connecting, disconnecting or changing the wiring of the drive, either to the mains or to accessories, remember to disconnect the power supply at the circuit breaker, by removing the power supply fuse, or by disconnecting the backup battery.

Drive photocells
Highly user-friendly BlueBUS technology allows you to power and control up to 7 pairs of photocells using a two-core cable.
Connecting multiple pairs of photocells NICE EPMB to the NICE BlueBUS
Position the photocells around the gate or door according to the example configurations for the complete installation, and set the jumpers according to the photocell jumper table for the NICE EPMB photocells gate drive. To prevent interference between pairs installed close to one another, make sure to follow these example configurations, and observe the orientation of the transmitters TX and receivers RX. Connect the photocells in parallel as shown (polarity does not need to be observed):
If you need the photocells to function as gate openers (see FA1 and FA2 in the example situations), i.e. when you drive a vehicle between their optical axes, so that they open the gate, you need to break link A on both the transmitter TX and receiver RX, see illustration:
Example photocell wiring setup

Connecting multiple pairs of photocells to the BlueBUS system is done by setting different jumper combinations; each connected pair must have a unique combination. Make sure that no two pairs in the same BlueBUS data network have the same combination. Within each pair of photocells, set the jumper on both the transmitter TX and receiver RX to the same value. If the jumper type uses only one jumper, or none at all, keep any unused jumpers for future use. |

If a photocell needs to be replaced for any reason, simply set it to the same jumper as the original one; there is no need to run the device learning procedure.
Radio receiver for gate operators
![]() |
NICE Robus RB600 gate operator is supplied with a NICE RBA3R10 control unit, which features an SM connector for connecting an external radio receiver (e.g. NICE OXI, NICE SMXI). This receiver is essential for receiving commands transmitted by remote controls, and is therefore required to operate the sliding gate remotely remote control. |
Selecting the gate travel direction
The sliding gate opening direction must be selected according to the position of the operator relative to the sliding gate leaf. View the gate from the side where the operator is installed.
| If the gate opens to the left, set the switch to the left. | If the gate opens to the right, set the switch to the right. |
The switch is on the right-hand side of the RBA3R10 control unit in the middle.
Learning the connected gate operator devices
After connecting, disconnecting, or changing the wiring of any accessories on the BlueBUS inputs and STOP the accessory learning procedure must be performed. The operator will indicate that this procedure is required by flashing LEDs L1 and L2.
![]() |
|
Gate leaf length recognition
For the gate to move correctly (in particular, to calculate the acceleration and deceleration distances and partial opening), the operator must determine the length of the gate leaf itself. During this operation, the operator moves the gate from one stop to the other and determines the gate length using a switch.

Programming the operator
The Robus operator allows you to program several functions, either by switching a function on or off using Level I programming, or by setting a default parameter using Level II programming.
The RBA3R10 control unit has three buttons for operating and programming the gate operator:
![]() |
Button | Function |
|---|---|---|
| Open | The button sends an open command to the gate operator. It is also used during programming to move the programmed parameter value up. | |
| Stop/Set | The button sends a stop command to the gate operator. Pressing and holding it for 5 seconds takes you to Level I programming. Pressing and holding it again takes you to Level II programming for the current LED. | |
| Close | The button sends a close command to the gate operator. It is also used during programming to move the programmed parameter value down. |
Level I programming
At Level I, programming turns the selected function on or off. When a function is enabled, the corresponding LED on the control unit lights up. All functions are disabled by default.
To enter Level I programming, press and hold the “Stop/Set” button for about 5 seconds, until the L1 LED starts flashing. Then use the “Open” and “Close” buttons to move the selected LED up or down. You have 10 seconds for each action; otherwise, the operator will exit programming mode. When the flashing LED is positioned above the LED for the function you want to enable or disable, press the “Stop/Set” button once to make it flash faster (function enabled) or slower (function disabled), then leave it as it is and allow the operator to exit programming mode after 10 seconds. If everything went smoothly, the LED for the function you enabled will remain lit.
List of functions that can be enabled or disabled:
| LED | Function | Description |
|---|---|---|
| L1 | Automatic closing | After a certain time (set under “Level II programming – Pause duration”), the gate will start closing automatically after it has opened. If this function is disabled, the gate can only be operated using a command from a gate remote control or similar. |
| L2 | Close after photocell interruption |
This function keeps the gate open only for the minimum time needed for a vehicle to pass through. Once the photocell beam is restored (after the vehicle has passed through), the gate will start closing automatically after 5 seconds. This function operates in one of two ways, depending on whether automatic closing is enabled (see the previous function). Automatic closing enabled – the gate stops when the photocell beam is restored and starts closing after 5 seconds. This means it may not open all the way. |
| L3 | Always close | After a power failure, the gate either remains in its current position (if this function is disabled) or closes (if the function is enabled). |
| L4 | Standby mode | This function reduces power consumption to a minimum. It is ideally suited for operation on a backup battery (e.g. NICE PS124). If this function is enabled, the control unit switches off one minute after the gate last moves BlueBUS input (and therefore all devices connected to it), all LEDs except BlueBUS LED, which will flash slowly. In this state, if a command is received, the control unit will restart first and only then carry out the command. |
| L5 | Boost | Disables the drive's gradual start at the beginning of a manoeuvre and starts it at full power. Suitable where friction is high or snow and ice need to be broken through, so this function is especially useful in winter. On the other hand, it reduces the service life of the drive. |
| L6 | Pre-flashing | After receiving a gate movement signal, the warning light flashes for three seconds to warn the surrounding area, and then the requested movement manoeuvre starts. |
| L7 | Close means partial opening | Command close always starts a partial gate opening manoeuvre. |
| L8 | Slave unit | Enabling this function is useful when installing two automated sliding gates facing each other — one drive is the master of the other. The slave drive has this function enabled and is synchronized with the master drive via the BlueBUS input. For more information, see Robus in slave mode. |
Level II programming
In Level II programming, values are assigned to the functions (these functions differ from those in Level I.).
Forget about Level I programming. Enter Level II programming by holding down the “Stop/Set” button for approx. 5 seconds, until LED L1. Then use the “Open” and “Close” buttons to move the current LED up or down. You have 10 seconds for each operation; otherwise, the drive will exit programming mode. When the flashing LED is above the LED for the function whose parameter you want to set, press and hold the “Stop/Set” button to enter the settings for that LED. The LED that remains lit (while you continue holding “Stop/Set”) indicates the current parameter value. You can increase or decrease this value using the “Open” or “ "Close” buttons (while continuing to hold “Stop/Set”), then release “Stop/Set” and wait for the drive to exit programming mode, which it will do within 10 seconds. To check that everything went correctly, repeat the procedure without changing the parameter value.

Automating two opposing sliding gates with two NICE Robus RB600 drives
If you need to automate two sliding gates facing each other, drives Robus drives can be configured in slave mode. The operating principle is that one drive is the master and sends commands to the other, slave.. All Robus drives are set as master by default, so this parameter must be configured on the slave drive in Level I programming. using function L8 – slave.
Restrictions on connecting the master and slave units
- The gate driven by the slave unit can only be opened fully (there is no option to partially open it).
- All devices (photocells, receiver, etc.) must be connected to the master unit. Only the following may be connected to the slave unit: warning beacon, S.C.A. output indicator, devices connected to the STOP input and P.P. (also called STEP-BY-STEP, or Step-by-step), OPEN inputs and CLOSE are ignored.
- If you want to use a backup battery (NICE PS124), each drive must have its own.
- All programmed functions on the slave unit are ignored except for functions programmed in:
| Level I programming. | Level II programming. |
|---|---|
| L4 - Standby mode | L3 - Motor speed |
| L5 - Peak | L4 - Output indicator |
| L8 - Slave unit | L5 - Motor force |
| L8 - Error log |
Installation procedure for two Robus drives in slave unit mode
1. Install the gates and drives and set the opening directions according to:
2. Connect the drives according to the diagram (observe the polarity of the BlueBUS wiring between the drives):
3. Run the power supply to both drives
4. On the slave unit, set the parameter in Level II programming L8 - Slave unit
5. Run the connected-device learning procedure on the slave unit
6. Run the connected-device learning procedure on the master unit
7. Run the leaf-length learning procedure on the master unit
Connecting additional external devices to the drive
![]() |
If you need to connect additional devices to the drive that require an external power supply (e.g. indicator lighting, key switch, magnetic cards, etc.), connect the device as shown in the diagram. The supply voltage is 24Vdc -30% to +50%, with a maximum current of 100mA. |
Special drive functions
Keeping the gate open
If a command to the STEP-BY-STEP input (also known as P.P. or Step-by-Step) is held for more than 2 seconds, the control unit will keep the gate open for as long as the command is active. This function is particularly useful when combined with a timer.
Forced operation
If a safety device fails, or an obstruction that cannot be removed gets in the beam of, for example, photocells and the gate will not move for safety reasons, you can activate the “Hold-to-run” mode, either permanently in Level II programming under setting L2 - Step-by-step mode to the value L7 - Hold-to-run, or temporarily:
- Send a command to the gate using a (remote control, key switch etc.)
- If there is a problem, the gate will not move and the warning light will probably indicate an error.
- Therefore, within 3 seconds of the previous command, send the command again and hold it.
- The gate will move while you hold the command and will stop when you release it.
Maintenance alert
In Level II programming under item L7 - Maintenance reminder you can set the number of cycles after which the drive signals that maintenance (inspection) is required. The drive signals this using the warning light (or on the S.C.A. output, if configured in Level II programming under item L4 - Output indicator level L7 - Maintenance) as follows:
| Number of cycles | Warning light indication | S.C.A. output indicator signal |
|---|---|---|
| less than 80% of the limit | Normal operation; flashes at half-second intervals. | Lights up for 2 seconds after opening begins. |
| 80-100% of the limit | Lights up for 2s after the manoeuvre starts, then continues normally. | Flashes during the manoeuvre. |
| over 100% of the limit | Lights up for 2s after the manoeuvre starts, then continues normally, and lights up for 2s after the manoeuvre ends. | It keeps flashing. |
Instructions for clearing the maintenance alert and checking the current number of limit manoeuvres can be found in chapter 7.4.3 of the manual.
Troubleshooting drive problems
If anything is unclear, or you have any other problem, feel free to contact our technical support team for NICE drives.
Depending on the nature of the problem
During installation (or if the drive fails), you may encounter one of the following problems:
|
Problem |
Possible solution |
|---|---|
|
The gate does not respond to the remote control, and the LED on the remote control does not light up. |
Check whether the batteries drive remote control are working properly; if not, replace them. Instructions can be found in the manual for the specific remote control. |
|
The gate does not respond to the remote control, but the LED on the remote control lights up. |
Check whether the remote control has been stored in the memory receiver is working properly, or try remote control programming it again. |
|
The gate does not move and the BlueBUS LED does not flash.
|
Check whether the drive is receiving 230V. If it is, test both fuses and, if necessary, replace them with new fuses of the same rating. |
|
The gate does not move and the warning light does not flash. |
Check whether the drive has registered the command. When a command is sent using the remote control the BlueBUS LED should flash rapidly twice. If the command is sent by another device via the STEP-BY-STEP input (P.P.), the corresponding STEP-BY-STEP LED should light up.. |
|
The gate does not move and the warning light flashes several times. |
Count the flashes and refer to Diagnostics using warning light flashes. |
|
The gate starts moving, then stops and begins moving in the opposite direction. |
The programmed motor force is probably too low for your gate. Check that nothing is obstructing the gate, and increase the drive force if necessary; alternatively, enable the Peak force. |
|
The gate starts moving, but the warning light does not work. |
Check whether there is voltage at the FLASH output while the gate is moving (the voltage level is not important, approx. 10-30Vdc). If there is voltage at the output, the problem is likely with the warning light, so try replacing it with a similar one to see if it works. If there is no voltage at the output, the FLASH output may be overloaded; check whether the wiring has short-circuited. |
|
The gate starts moving, but the S.C.A. output does not work. |
Check the type of function programmed for the S.C.A. output and, if the output should flash, check whether voltage is present (approximately 24Vdc). If there is voltage at the output, the bulb is likely faulty; try replacing it with a similar one to see if it works. If there is no voltage at the output, the S.C.A. output may be overloaded; check whether the wiring has short-circuited. |
Diagnostics using warning light flashes
While the gate is moving warning light flashes regularly once per second. If a problem occurs, the warning light signals an error with two faster sequences of flashes.
|
Flash sequence |
Error |
Solution |
|---|---|---|
|
1 flash 1-second pause 1 flash |
BlueBUS error
|
The devices connected to the BlueBUS input do not match those detected during the device detection phase. Run the detection phase again. If that does not help, try once more; otherwise, use a process of elimination to find the faulty device and replace it (purchase, return under warranty, or repair it). |
|
2 flashes 1-second pause 2 flashes |
Photocell activation |
The photocellsare activating, which is normal if their beam is interrupted while the gate is closing. If the beam was not interrupted, the photocells may be dirty, exposed to glare, or faulty. |
|
3 flashes 1-second pause 3 flashes |
Motor force limiter activated
|
While the gate is moving excessive friction is detected — the gate may not be properly adjusted. Try moving it by hand and readjusting it. Otherwise, it usually helps to increase the motor force, or enable the Peak force function. Another possible problem is that the bottom stop is too high. |
|
4 flashes 1-second pause 4 flashes |
STOP input activated
|
A command was sent to the STOP input, so if this activation was unexpected, check the devices connected to it. |
|
5 flashes 1-second pause 5 flashes |
Internal control unit error |
Wait 30 seconds and try again. If the problem persists, try resetting it. Otherwise, the control unit will probably need to be repaired or replaced. |
|
6 flashes 1-second pause 6 flashes |
Hourly manoeuvre limit reached. |
Wait a few minutes for the cycle limiter to fall below the limit. |
|
7 flashes 1-second pause 7 flashes |
Internal electronic circuit error. |
Disconnect the entire drive for a few seconds and try again. If the problem persists, try resetting it. Otherwise, the control unit will probably need to be repaired or replaced. |
|
8 flashes 1-second pause 8 flashes |
Continuous command active.
|
A command is being sent continuously to the drive – check the devices connected to the OPEN input. If you have a timer connected, it is probably the cause.
|
Diagnostics using LED flashes
On the RBA3R10 control unit for the NICE Robus RB600 drive, there are two sets of LEDs. Each set uses flashing or steady lights to indicate normal operation of the control unit or to diagnose faults, as shown in the tables below.
