NICE Robus RB400 at a glance
NICE Robus is a range irreversible electromechanical gear drives for sliding gates. They are supplied with a built-in (but removable) NICE RBA3R10 control unit with an SM connector for external receivers radio signal NICE SMXI, or NICE OXI. Electrical connections for external devices (photocells, warning light, etc.) have been simplified in the NICE Robus sliding gate drive range by using BlueBUS, which allows several devices to be connected to a shared terminal using just one two-core cable, with no need to observe polarity. Automatic operation depends on the power supply, but if there is a power failure, the gear motor can of course be released with a special release key so the gate can be operated manually. It is also possible to purchase an optional NICE PS124 backup battery, which allows the gate drive to operate during a power outage.
Choosing a drive—is the NICE Robus RB400 suitable for my gate?
Every gate has its own size (and therefore its leverage) and weight (and therefore the force exerted by its weight) and every drive has its limits. The NICE Robus RB400 drive can be used with gates of the following leaf lengths and weights:
| Cycles per hour Consecutive cycles |
Gate leaf weight | ||
| Up to 200kg | 200-400kg | ||
|---|---|---|---|
|
L |
Up to 4m |
35 |
16 |
| 4-6m | 23 11 |
11 5 |
|
| 6-7m | 20 10 |
10 5 |
|
Basically gate leaf length determines the maximum number of cycles per hour and also the number of consecutive cycles, i.e. it specifies how long the drive can operate. A greater weight further reduces the number of these cycles in percentage terms, due to the increased strain on the drive, and also determines the maximum permitted speed under that load. The drive is equipped with a device (thermal cut-out), which measures both the motor temperature and the ambient temperature, and reduces the number of possible cycles accordingly.
NICE Robus RB400 drive limits
The values shown are those recommended by NICE. Based on our experience, we recommend allowing the drive a reserve of approx. 80% of the values shown:
| Maximum | Recommended | |
|---|---|---|
| Gate leaf length | 7 m | 5 m |
| Gate leaf weight | 400 kg | 320 kg |
Using the drive at its maximum capacity reduces its service life — see the estimated calculation of the drive's service life depending on stress factors:
NICE Robus RB400 drive service life
In the following table, add the stress indices for the gate leaf weight and length, then add the indices for other factors, if applicable. Then use the graph to read off the drive's service life, expressed as a number of cycles.
Example: I have a gate with a clear opening of 4.5 m and a structure weight, including infill, of up to 200 kg (a standard gate). I calculate the gate leaf length index as approx. 15 + the gate weight index of 10 +, to be on the safe side, I add a low-temperature index of 10 because our winters are harsher, giving me a total index of 35. The graph shows that the drive's service life is approximately 120,000 cycles. At 10 operations per day, this gives an estimated service life of approximately 32 years.
| Characteristics of the complete automation system | Index | Service life graph |
|---|---|---|
| Gate leaf weight |
The recommended maximum total index is up to 75%. (i.e. 40,000 cycles, which corresponds to 10 years at the usual rate of 10 cycles per day)

Installing the NICE Robus RB400 drive
The installation method for the drive is different for track-mounted sliding gate and cantilever sliding gate different. For a track-mounted gate, the drive is generally installed at ground level, while for a cantilever gate it is necessary to drives raise it using, for example, threaded rods (threaded rod Ø8), a homemade mounting bracket, a raised concrete base, etc. The key factor is the height of the rack, which should ideally mesh with the drive pinion; see Rack and its end stop.
Wiring
A typical (optional) wiring layout for the drive and accessories is as follows:

See "What height should I install the drive at".
Rack and its limit stop
The gate moves by converting the rotary torque of the drive's pinion into linear motion via the rack-and-pinion mechanism on the drive rack. The two most commonly used types of drive rack are:
|
Nylon rack (possibly with steel reinforcement) – attaches to the gate with self-tapping screws through the mounting holes. Ideal for relatively light and short gates. The drive runs quietly thanks to the friction between the steel pinion and the nylon rack. |
|
|
Steel rack – attaches to the gate by welding on threaded brackets, which the rack is then screwed into. Used for longer and heavier gates. The drive is slightly noisier because the steel pinion rubs against the steel rack. |
It is essential that the drive tooth module is compatible with the rack module. The NICE Robus RB400 has a tooth module of 4.
The drive detects the end positions when opening and closing using limit stops mounted on the rack:
Wiring the NICE Robus RB400 drive
Before wiring, disconnecting, or changing the wiring of the drive, mains supply, or accessories, remember to disconnect the power supply at the circuit breaker, by removing the power fuse, or by disconnecting the backup battery.

Standard wiring diagram:
Operator photocells
The very user-friendly BlueBUS technology allows you to power and control up to 7 pairs of photocells using a two-core cable.
Connecting multiple pairs of photocells NICE EPMB to the data network NICE BlueBUS
Position the photocells around the gate or gates according to the example layouts for the complete wiring and set the jumpers according to the jumper table for the NICE EPMB photocells gate operator. To prevent interference between pairs installed close to one another, you must follow these example layouts, and observe the orientation of the transmitters TX and receivers RX. Connect the photocells in parallel as shown (polarity does not need to be observed):
If you need the photocells to operate as gate openers (see FA1 and FA2 in the example layouts), i.e. when a vehicle passes between their optical axes, causing the gate to open, you need to break connection A on the transmitter TX and receiver RX, see illustration:
Example photocell wiring setup
NICE photocell jumper table EPMB gate operator
![]() |
Connecting multiple pairs of photocells to the system BlueBUS is done by setting different jumper combinations, with each connected pair requiring a unique combination. Make sure that no two pairs in the same BlueBUS data network have the same combination. Set the same jumper configuration on both the TX transmitter and RX receiver of each photocell pair. If the jumper configuration uses only one jumper, or none at all, always keep the remaining jumpers for future use. |

If a photocell needs to be replaced for any reason, simply set the same jumper as on the original one; there is no need to run the device recognition procedure.
Radio receiver for gate operators
![]() |
NICE Robus RB400 gate operator is supplied with NICE RBA3R10 control unit, which has an SM connector for connecting an external radio receiver (e.g. NICE OXI, NICE SMXI). This receiver is essential for receiving commands transmitted by remote controls, and is therefore required to operate the sliding gate remotely with a remote control. |
Selecting the gate opening direction
The sliding gate's opening direction must be selected with regard to the position of the operator relative to the sliding gate leaf. View the gate from the side where the operator is installed.
| If the gate opens to the left, set the switch to the left. | If the gate opens to the right, set the switch to the right. |
The switch is located on the right-hand side of the RBA3R10 control unit in the middle.
Recognizing connected gate operator devices
Whenever an accessory connected to the BlueBUS inputs or STOP is connected, disconnected, or rewired, the accessory recognition procedure must be carried out. The operator will alert you that this procedure is required by flashing LEDs L1 and L2.

Measuring the Gate Leaf Length
For the gate to move correctly (in particular, to calculate the acceleration and deceleration distances and partial opening), the drive must measure the gate leaf length itself. During this procedure, the drive moves the gate from one stop to the other and measures its length using a switch.

Programming the Drive
The Robus drive allows you to program several functions, either by switching a function on or off through Level I programming,or by setting a default parameter through Level II programming..
The RBA3R10 control unit has three buttons for operating and programming the drive:
![]() |
Button | Function |
|---|---|---|
| Open | This button sends the drive a command to open the gate. It is also used during programming to move the selected parameter value up. | |
| Stop/Set | This button sends the drive a command to stop the gate. Press and hold it for 5 seconds to enter Level I programming. Press and hold it again to enter Level II programming. for the current LED. | |
| Close | This button sends the drive a command to close the gate. It is also used during programming to move the selected parameter value down. |
Level I Programming
At Level I, programming switches the selected function on or off. When a function is enabled, its corresponding LED on the control unit lights up. All functions are disabled by default.
To enter Level I programming, press and hold the “Stop/Set” button for approximately 5 seconds, until the L1 LED starts flashing. Then use the “Open” and “Close” buttons to move the selected LED up or down. You have 10 seconds for each action; otherwise, the drive will exit programming mode. When the flashing LED is above the LED for the function you want to enable or disable, press the “Stop/Set” button once to make it flash faster (function enabled) or slower (function disabled), then leave it as it is and wait for the drive to exit programming mode within 10 seconds. If everything went well, the LED for the function being enabled will remain lit.
List of functions that can be enabled through programming:
| LED | Function | Description |
|---|---|---|
| L1 | Automatic Closing | After a set time (configured under “Level II Programming – Pause Time”), the gate will close automatically after opening. If this function is disabled, the gate can only be operated using a command from a gate remote control or similar device. |
| L2 | Close After Photocells Are Triggered |
This function keeps the gate open only for as long as necessary for a vehicle to pass through. Once the photocells are clear (the vehicle has passed through), the gate will begin closing automatically after 5 seconds. This function behaves in two different ways, depending on whether automatic closing is enabled (see the previous function). Automatic closing enabled – the gate stops when the photocells are clear and begins closing after 5 seconds. This means it does not have to open all the way. |
| L3 | Always Close | After a power failure, the gate either remains in its current position (if this function is disabled) or closes (if the function is enabled). |
| L4 | Standby Mode | This function reduces power consumption to a minimum. It is particularly useful when powered by a backup battery (e.g. NICE PS124). When this function is enabled, one minute after the gate last moved, the control unit switches off the BlueBUS input (and therefore all devices connected to it), as well as all LEDs except the BlueBUS LED, which flashes slowly. If a command is received in this state, the control unit will restart first and then execute the command. |
| L5 | Soft Start | Disables the drive's gradual start at the beginning of the cycle, so the drive starts at full power immediately. full force. Suitable when friction is high or when snow and ice need to be broken through, so this function is mainly useful in winter. On the other hand, it reduces the drive's service life. |
| L6 | Pre-flashing | After receiving a gate movement signal, first beacon it flashes for three seconds to warn the surrounding area, and only then does the requested movement begin. |
| L7 | Close means Partial opening | Command close always starts the partial opening of the gate. |
| L8 | Slave unit | Enabling this function is useful when installing two automated sliding gates facing each other – one drive is the master of the other. Slave drive has this function enabled and is synchronized with the master drive via the BlueBUS input. For more information, see Robus in slave mode. |
Level II programming
At Level II, programming sets values for the various functions (these functions differ from those in Level I.).
Forget about Level I programming. To enter Level II programming, press and hold the “Stop/Set” for approx. 5 seconds, until LED L1. Then use the “Open” and “Close” buttons to move the current LED up or down, respectively. You have 10 seconds for each operation; otherwise, the drive will exit programming mode. When the flashing LED reaches the LED for the function whose parameter you want to set, press and hold “Stop/Set” to enter the setting for that LED. The LED that remains lit (while you continue holding “Stop/Set”) indicates the current parameter value. You can change this value up or down using the “Open” or “Close” buttons (while continuing to hold “Stop/Set”), then release “Stop/Set” and wait for the drive to exit programming mode, which it will do within 10 seconds. To check that everything worked correctly, repeat the procedure without changing the parameter value.

Automating two opposing sliding gates with two NICE Robus RB400 drives
If you need to automate two sliding gates facing each other, drives Robus drives can be configured in slave mode. The operating principle is that one drive acts as the master and sends commands to the other, slave.. All Robus drives are set as master at the factory, so this parameter must be configured on the slave drive in Level I programming. using function L8 – slave.
Restrictions on connecting a master and a slave
- The slave-operated gate cannot be opened in any way other than fully (there is no option for partial opening).
- All devices (photocells, receiver, etc.) must be connected to the master. Only the following may be connected to the slave: warning light, S.C.A. output indicator, devices connected to the STOP input and P.P. (also called STEP-BY-STEP, or Step-by-step), OPEN inputs and CLOSE are ignored.
- If you want to use a backup battery (NICE PS124), each drive must have its own.
- All functions programmed on the slave are ignored, except for functions programmed in:
| Level I programming. | Level II programming. |
|---|---|
| L4 – Standby mode | L3 – Motor speed |
| L5 – Peak | L4 – Output indicator |
| L8 – Slave | L5 - Motor force |
| L8 - Error log |
Installation procedure for two Robus drives in slave mode
1. Install the gates and drives and set the opening directions as follows:
2. Connect the drives as shown in the diagram (make sure to observe the polarity of the BlueBUS connection connection between the drives):
3. Route the power supply to both drives
4. In the Level II programming menu, set parameter L8 - Slave unit
5. Run the connected-device recognition procedure on the slave unit
6. Run the connected-device recognition procedure on the master unit
7. Run the leaf-length recognition procedure on the master unit
Connecting additional external devices to the drive
![]() |
If you need to connect additional devices to the drive that require an external power supply (e.g. indicator lights, key switch, magnetic cards, etc.), connect the device as shown in the diagram. The supplied voltage is 24 V DC, -30% to +50%, with a maximum current of 100 mA. |
Special drive functions
Gate held open
If the command to the STEP-BY-STEP input (also known as P.P. or Step-by-Step) lasts longer than 2 seconds, the control unit will keep the gate open for as long as the command is active. This function is particularly useful when combined with a timer.
Forced operation
If a safety device fails, or, for example, an obstruction that cannot be removed enters the beam of the photocells and the gate will not move for safety reasons, you can activate the “Hold-to-run” mode, either permanently in Level II programming by setting L2 - Step-by-step mode to L7 - Hold-to-run, or temporarily:
- Send a command to the gate using the (remote control, key switch etc.)
- If there is a problem, the gate will not move and the warning light will probably indicate an error.
- So, within 3 seconds of the previous command, send the command again and hold it.
- The gate will move while you hold the command and stop when you release it.
Maintenance notification
In Level II programming under L7 - Maintenance alert you can set the number of cycles after which the drive should signal that maintenance (an inspection) is required. The drive signals this with the warning light (or, if configured in S.C.A. output, in Level II programming under L4 - Output indicator set to L7 - Maintenance) as follows:
| Number of cycles | Warning light signal | S.C.A. output indicator signal |
|---|---|---|
| less than 80% of the limit | Normal operation; flashes at half-second intervals. | “On” for 2 seconds after opening starts. |
| 80–100% of the limit | On for 2 seconds after the operation starts, then operates normally. | Flashes during operation. |
| over 100% of the limit | On for 2 seconds after the operation starts, then operates normally; on for 2 seconds after the operation ends. | Flashes continuously. |
For instructions on clearing the maintenance notification and checking the current number of operations against the limit, see section 7.4.3 of the manual.
Troubleshooting the drive
If anything is unclear or you have any other problem, feel free to contact our technical support team for NICE drives.
Depending on the nature of the problem
During installation (or if the drive malfunctions), you may encounter one of the following problems:
|
Problem |
Possible solution |
|---|---|
|
The gate does not respond to the remote-control command and the LED on the remote control does not light up. |
Check whether the batteries drive remote control are in good condition; if not, replace them. You can find the instructions in the manual for the specific remote control. |
|
The gate does not respond to the remote control command, but the LED on the remote control lights up. |
Check whether the remote control has been stored in the memory of the receiver and whether the receiver is working properly, or try reprogramming the remote control again. |
|
The gate does not move and the BlueBUS LED does not flash.
|
Check whether the operator is powered at 230V. If so, test both fuses and, if necessary, replace them with new ones of the same rating. |
|
The gate does not move and the warning light does not flash. |
Check whether the operator has registered the command. When a command is sent using the remote control should BlueBUS LED flash quickly twice. If the command is sent by another device via the STEP-BY-STEP input (P.P.), the corresponding STEP-BY-STEP LED. |
|
The gate does not move and the warning light flashes several times. |
Count the flashes and see Diagnostics using warning-light flashes. |
|
The gate starts moving, but stops immediately and begins moving in the opposite direction. |
The programmed motor force is probably too low for your gate. Check whether anything is obstructing the gate's movement and, if necessary, increase the operator force or enable the Peak. |
|
The gate starts moving, but the warning light does not work. |
Check whether there is voltage at the FLASH output during gate operation (the voltage level is not important, approx. 10-30Vdc). If there is voltage at the output, the problem is likely with the warning light, try replacing it with a similar one to see if it works. If there is no voltage at the output, the FLASH output may be overloaded. Check whether the wiring has short-circuited. |

The gate starts moving, but the S.C.A. output does not work. |
Find out what type of function is programmed for the S.C.A. output and, if the output is supposed to flash, check whether there is voltage at the output (approximately 24Vdc). If there is voltage at the output, the bulb is likely faulty. Try replacing it with a similar one to see if it works. If there is no voltage at the output, the S.C.A. output may be overloaded. Check whether the wiring has short-circuited. |
Diagnostics using warning-light flashes
During gate operation, the warning light flashes regularly once every second. If a problem occurs, the warning light signals the fault with two faster consecutive series of flashes.
|
Flash sequence |
Fault |
Solution |
|---|---|---|
|
1 flash 1-second pause 1 flash |
BlueBUS fault
|
The devices connected to the BlueBUS input do not match those detected during the device detection phase.. Run the detection phase again. If that does not help, try once more. Otherwise, use the process of elimination to identify the faulty device and replace it (purchase a replacement, submit a warranty claim, or have it repaired). |
|
2 flashes 1-second pause 2 flashes |
Photocell activation |
The photocellsare being triggered, which is normal if their beam is interrupted while the gate is closing. If the beam was not interrupted, the photocells may be dirty, exposed to bright light, or faulty. |
|
3 flashes 1-second pause 3 flashes |
Motor force limiter activated
|
While the gate is moving, check for increased friction—you may need to adjust the gate. Try moving it manually and realigning it. Otherwise, the usual solution is to increase the motor forceor enable the Peak function.. Another possible problem is that you have the lower stop set too high. |
|
4 flashes 1-second pause 4 flashes |
STOP input activated
|
A command was sent to the STOP input, so if this is unexpected behavior, check the devices connected to it. |
|
5 flashes 1-second pause 5 flashes |
Internal control unit fault |
Wait 30 seconds and try again. If the problem persists, try to reset it.. Otherwise, the control unit will probably need to be repaired or replaced. |
|
6 flashes 1-second pause 6 flashes |
The hourly limit for operations has been reached. |
Wait a few minutes for the cycle limiter to drop below its limit. |
|
7 flashes 1-second pause 7 flashes |
Internal electronic circuit fault. |
Disconnect the entire operator for a few seconds and try again. If it persists, try resetting it. Otherwise, the control unit will probably need to be repaired or replaced. |
|
8 flashes 1-second pause 8 flashes |
Continuous command active.
|
A command is being continuously sent to the operator – try checking the devices connected to the OPEN input. If you have a timer connected, that is probably the cause.
|
Diagnostics using LED flashes
On the RBA3R10 control unit for the NICE Robus RB400 gate operator there are two sets of LEDs, each of which indicates normal operation of the control unit or diagnoses faults by flashing or staying lit, as shown in the tables below.
