NICE Robus RB1000 at a glance
NICE Robus is a range of irreversible electromechanical gear drives for sliding gates. They are supplied with a built-in (but removable) NICE RBA3R10 control unit with an SM connector for external receivers radio signal NICE SMXI, or NICE OXI. Electrical wiring of external devices (photocells, warning light, etc.) has been simplified across the NICE Robus range of sliding gate drives by using BlueBUS, which allows multiple devices to be connected to a shared connector using just one two-core cable, with no need to observe polarity. Automatic operation depends on the power supply, but if the power goes out, the gear motor can of course be released with a special release key and the gate operated manually. It is also possible to purchase an optional NICE PS124 backup battery, which allows the gate drive to operate even during a power outage.
Choosing a drive – is the NICE Robus RB1000 suitable for my gate?
Every gate has its own size (and therefore leverage) and weight (and therefore the gravitational force acting on the lever) and every drive has its limits. The drive NICE Robus RB1000 is suitable for the following gate leaf lengths and gate weights:

In principle gate leaf length determines the maximum number of cycles per hour and also the number of consecutive cycles, i.e. it indicates how long the drive can remain in operation. A greater weight further reduces the number of these cycles by a percentage, due to the greater strain on the drive, and also determines the maximum permitted speed at the given load. The drive is equipped with a device (thermal cut-out), which measures both the motor temperature and the ambient temperature, and reduces the number of possible cycles accordingly.
NICE Robus RB1000 drive limits
The values shown are those recommended by the manufacturer, NICE. Based on our experience, we recommend leaving the drive a reserve of approx. 80% of the stated values:
| Maximum | Recommended | |
|---|---|---|
| Gate leaf length | 12 m | 9.5 m |
| Gate leaf weight | 1000 kg | 800 kg |
Using the drive at full capacity reduces its service life - see the estimated calculation of the drive's service life based on stress factors:
NICE Robus RB1000 drive service life
In the following table, add the stress indices for the gate leaf weight and length, and add the indices for other factors if applicable. Then use the graph to determine the drive's service life, expressed as a number of cycles.
Example: I have a gate with a clear opening of 4.5 m and a structure weighing up to 200kg including infill (a standard gate). I calculate the gate leaf length index as approx. 15 + the gate weight index of 10 + to be on the safe side, I add a low-temperature index of 10 because our winters are colder, giving me a total index of 35. The graph shows that the drive's service life is approximately 120,000 cycles. At 10 operations per day, this gives a service life of approximately 32 years.
| Properties of the entire automation system | Index | Service life graph |

The recommended maximum total duty factor is up to 75%. (i.e. 40,000 cycles, which at normal use of 10 cycles/day is 10 years)

Installing the NICE Robus RB1000 drive
The installation method of the drive is different for a track-mounted sliding gate and a cantilever sliding gate different. For a track-mounted gate the drive is generally installed at ground level, while for a cantilever gate it is necessary to drives raise the drive using, for example, threaded rods (Ø8 threaded rod), a custom-made bracket, a raised concrete base, etc. The key factor is the height of the toothed rack, so that it meshes perfectly with the drive's pinion; see Toothed rack and its end stop.

Rack and end stop
The gate moves by transferring the torque of the operator’s pinion into linear motion via the rack-and-pinion drive on the operator rack. There are two commonly used types of racks:
|
Nylon rack (optionally with steel reinforcement) – attached to the gate using self-tapping screws through the mounting holes. Ideal for relatively light and short gates. The steel pinion and nylon rack mesh quietly. |
|
|
Steel rack – attached to the gate by welding on threaded brackets, then screwing the rack into them. Used for longer and heavier gates. The steel pinion meshing with the steel rack makes operation slightly noisier. |
It is essential that the operator pinion module is compatible with the rack module. The NICE Robus RB1000 operator has a pinion module of 4.
The operator detects the end position when opening and closing using limit stops mounted on the rack:
Wiring the NICE Robus RB1000 operator
Before connecting, disconnecting or changing the wiring of the operator to the mains or to any accessories, remember to disconnect the power supply, either at the circuit breaker, by removing the power supply fuse, or by disconnecting the backup battery.

Drive photocells
A highly user-friendly BlueBUS technology allows you to power and control up to 7 pairs of photocells using a two-core cable.
Wiring multiple pairs of photocells NICE EPMB to the data network NICE BlueBUS
Position the photocells around the gate or door according to the example layouts for the complete wiring, and set the jumpers according to the jumper table for the photocells NICE EPMB for the gate drive. To prevent interference between pairs placed close to one another, make sure to follow these example layouts, and maintain the orientation of the transmitters TX and receivers RX. Connect the photocells in parallel as shown (polarity does not need to be observed):
If you need the photocells to operate as gate openers (see FA1 and FA2 in the example layouts), i.e. to open the gate when a vehicle passes between their optical axes, you need to interrupt connection A on the transmitter TX and receiver RX, as shown in the illustration:
Example photocell wiring layout

![]() |
Connecting multiple pairs of photocells to the BlueBUS system is done by setting different jumper combinations; each connected pair must have a unique jumper combination. Make sure that no two pairs in the same BlueBUS data network have the same combination. Within each pair of photocells, set the jumper to the same value on both the transmitter (TX) and receiver (RX). If the jumper type requires only one jumper, or none, always keep the unused jumpers for future use. |

If a photocell needs to be replaced for any reason, simply set it to the same jumper as the original one; there is no need to perform the device recognition procedure.
Radio signal receiver for operators
![]() |
NICE Robus RB1000 operator is supplied with NICE RBA3R10 control unit, which has an SM connector for connecting an external radio receiver (e.g. NICE OXI, NICE SMXI). This receiver is essential for receiving commands sent from remote controls, and is therefore required to operate the sliding gate remotely using a remote control. |
Selecting the gate opening direction
The sliding gate opening direction must be selected based on the position of the operator relative to the sliding gate leaf. View the gate from the side where the operator is installed.
| If the gate opens to the left, set the switch to the left. | If the gate opens to the right, set the switch to the right. |
The switch is located on the right-hand side of the RBA3R10 control unit in the middle.
Recognising connected operator devices
After each connection, disconnection or change to the wiring of accessories on the BlueBUS inputs and STOP the accessory recognition procedure must be performed. The operator will indicate that this procedure is required by flashing LEDs L1 and L2.
![]() |
|
Recognising the gate leaf length
For the gate to operate correctly (including calculating acceleration and deceleration distances and partial opening), the operator must detect the gate leaf length itself. During this procedure, the operator moves the gate from one stop to the other and uses a switch to determine its length.

Operator programming
The Robus operator allows you to program several functions, such as switching a function on or off by programming Level I., or by setting the default parameter by programming Level II.
RBA3R10 control unit has three buttons for operating and programming the drive:
![]() |
Button | Function |
|---|---|---|
| Open | The button allows you to send an open-gate command to the drive. In programming mode, it is also used to move the value of the parameter being programmed upwards. | |
| Stop/Set | The button allows you to send a stop-gate command to the drive. Press and hold it for the first time for 5 seconds to enter Level I programming. Press and hold it again to enter Level II programming. for the current LED. | |
| Close | The button allows you to send a close-gate command to the drive. In programming mode, it is also used to move the value of the parameter being programmed downwards. |
Level I Programming.
At Level I, programming turns the given function on or off. When a function is enabled, its corresponding LED on the control unit lights up. All functions are disabled by default.
To enter Level I programming, press and hold the “Stop/Set” button for about 5 seconds, until LED L1 starts flashing. Then use the “Open” and “Close” buttons to move the current LED up or down. You have 10 seconds for each action; otherwise, the drive will exit programming mode. When the flashing LED reaches the LED for the function you want to enable or disable, press the “Stop/Set” button once to make it flash faster (function enabled) or slower (function disabled), then leave it as is and allow the drive to exit programming mode within 10 seconds. If everything went as expected, the corresponding LED for the function being enabled will remain lit.
List of programmable functions that can be enabled:
| LED | Function | Description |
|---|---|---|
| L1 | Automatic closing | After a set time (configured under “Level II Programming – Pause duration”), the gate starts closing automatically after it has opened. If this function is disabled, the gate can only be operated by a command from the gate remote control and similar devices. |
| L2 | Close after photocells are cleared |
This function keeps the gate open only for as long as needed for a vehicle to pass through. Once the photocells are cleared (after the vehicle has passed through), the gate starts closing automatically after 5 seconds. This function behaves in two different ways depending on whether automatic closing is enabled (see the previous function). Automatic closing enabled – the gate stops when the photocells are cleared and starts closing after 5 seconds. This means it does not have to open all the way. |
| L3 | Always close | After a power failure, the gate either stays as it was (if this function is disabled) or closes (if this function is enabled). |
| L4 | Standby mode | This function reduces power consumption to a minimum. It is ideal when using a backup battery (e.g. NICE PS124). When this function is enabled, one minute after the gate last moves, the control unit switches off the BlueBUS input (and therefore all devices connected to it), as well as all LEDs except the BlueBUS LED, which flashes slowly. In this state, if a command is received, the control unit restarts first and only then carries out the command. |
| L5 | Boost | Disables the drive’s gradual start at the beginning of a cycle, making the drive start at full force. Useful when friction is high or when the drive needs to push through snow and ice, making this function especially useful in winter. On the other hand, it reduces the service life of the drive. |
| L6 | Pre-flashing | When a gate movement command is received, the warning light flashes for three seconds to warn people nearby before the requested movement cycle starts. |
| L7 | Close means partial opening | A close always starts a partial opening of the gate. |
| L8 | Slave unit | Enabling this function is useful when installing two automated sliding gates facing each other – one drive acts as the master for the other. The slave drive has this function enabled and is synchronized with the master drive via the BlueBUS input. See also Robus in slave mode. |
Level II Programming.
At Level II, programming sets the values for the individual functions (these functions differ from Level I.).
Forget about Level I programming. Enter Level II programming by holding down the “Stop/Set” button for approx. 5 seconds, until the LED L1. Then use the “Open” and “Close” buttons to move the current LED up or down, respectively. You have 10 seconds for each action; otherwise, the drive will exit programming mode. When the flashing LED reaches the function LED whose parameter you want to set, press and hold the “Stop/Set” button to enter the setting for that LED. The LED that remains lit (while you continue holding “Stop/Set”) indicates the current parameter value. You can change this value up or down using the “Open” or “Close” buttons (continue holding the “Stop/Set” button). Then release “Stop/Set” and wait for the drive to exit programming mode, which it will do within 10 seconds. To check that everything went as expected, repeat the procedure without changing the parameter value.

Automating two opposing sliding gates with two NICE Robus RB1000 drives
If you need to automate two sliding gates facing each other, drives Robus drives can be connected in slave mode. The operating principle is that one drive acts as the master and sends commands to the other, the slave.. All Robus drives are set as master at the factory, so this parameter must be set on the slave drive in Level I programming. using function L8 - slave.
Restrictions for master/slave connections
- The gate operated by the slave cannot be opened by any amount other than fully (there is no option for partial opening).
- All devices (photocells, receiver, etc.) must be connected to the master. Only the following may be connected to the slave: warning light, S.C.A. output indicator, devices connected to the STOP input and P.P. (also called STEP-BY-STEP, or Step-by-step), OPEN inputs and CLOSE are ignored.
- If you want to use a backup battery (NICE PS124), each drive must have its own.
- All functions programmed on the slave are ignored, except for functions programmed in:
| Level I programming. | Level II programming. |
|---|---|
| L4 - Standby mode | L3 - Motor speed |
| L5 - Peak | L4 - Output indicator |
| L8 - Slave | L5 - Motor force |
| L8 - Error log |
Installation procedure for two Robus drives in slave mode
1. Install the gates and drives and set the opening directions as shown in:
2. Connect the drives as shown in the diagram (observe the polarity of the BlueBUS connection between the drives):
3. Connect the power supply to both drives
4. In Level II programming, set the parameter on the slave L8 - Slave
5. Perform the connected-device detection procedure on the slave
6. Perform the connected devices detection phase on the master control unit
7. Perform the gate leaf length detection phase on the master control unit
Connecting additional external devices to the drive
![]() |
If you need to connect additional devices to the drive that require an external power supply (e.g. indicator lighting, key switch, magnetic cards, etc.), connect the device as shown in the diagram. The supplied voltage is 24Vdc -30% to +50%, with a maximum current of 100mA. |
Special drive functions
Gate held open
If the command to the STEP-BY-STEP input (also referred to as P.P. or Step-by-Step) lasts longer than 2 seconds, the control unit will keep the gate open for as long as the command is active. This function is particularly useful when used with a timer.
Forced movement
If a safety device fails, or, for example, an obstruction that cannot be removed gets in the beam of the photocells and, for safety reasons, the gate will not move, you can activate the “Hold-to-run” mode, either permanently in Level II programming under the setting L2 - Step-by-Step mode to the value L7 - Hold-to-run, or temporarily:
- Send a command to the gate (using aremote control, key switch or similar device).
- If there is a problem, the gate will not move and the beacon will probably signal an error..
- Within 3 seconds of the previous command, send the command again and hold it.
- The gate will move while you hold the command; as soon as you release it, the gate will stop.
Maintenance alert
In Level II programming section L7 - Maintenance reminder you can set the number of cycles after which the drive should signal that maintenance (inspection) is required. The drive signals this using the beacon (or on the S.C.A. output, if configured under Level II programming in section L4 - Output indicator level L7 - Maintenance) as follows:
| Number of cycles | Beacon signal | S.C.A. output indicator signal |
|---|---|---|
| less than 80% of the limit | Normal operation; flashes at half-second intervals. | “Lights up” for 2 seconds after opening begins. |
| 80–100% of the limit | Lights up for 2 seconds after the movement begins, then resumes normal operation. | Flashes during movement. |
| over 100% of the limit | Lights up for 2 seconds after the movement begins, then resumes normal operation, and lights up for 2 seconds after the movement ends. | Flashes continuously. |
For instructions on clearing the maintenance alert and checking the current number of movement cycles against the limit, see chapter 7.4.3 of the manual.
Troubleshooting the drive
If anything is unclear, or you encounter any other problem, feel free to contact our technical support team for NICE drives.
Depending on the nature of the problem
During installation (or if the drive fails), you may encounter one of the following problems:
|
Problem |
Possible solution |
|---|---|
|
The gate does not respond to a remote-control command, and the LED on the remote control does not light up. |
Check that the batteries drive remote control are in good condition; if not, replace them. Refer to the manual for the specific remote control for instructions. |
|
The gate does not respond to a remote-control command, but the LED on the remote control lights up. |
Check whether the remote control has been stored in the memory of the receiver and, if it has, try remote control storing it again. |
|
The gate does not move and the BlueBUS LED does not flash.
|
Check whether the drive is supplied with 230V. If it is, test both fuses and, if necessary, replace them with new ones of the same rating. |
|
The gate does not move and the beacon does not flash. |
Check whether the drive has registered the command. When a command is sent using a remote control the BlueBUS LED should flash quickly twice. If the command is sent by another device via the STEP-BY-STEP input (P.P.), the corresponding STEP-BY-STEP LED should light up.. |
|
The gate does not move and the beacon flashes several times. |
Count the flashes and see Beacon-flash diagnostics. |
|
The gate starts moving, but stops immediately and starts moving in the opposite direction. |
Programmed motor force is probably too low for your gate. Check that there are no obstacles preventing the gate from moving and, if necessary, increase the drive force or enable the Kick-start. |
|
The gate starts moving, but the warning light does not work. |
Check whether there is voltage at the FLASH output during gate operation (the voltage level is not important, approx. 10–30 Vdc). If there is voltage at the output, the problem is likely with the warning light, try replacing it with a similar one to see if it works. If there is no voltage at the output, the FLASH output may be overloaded. Check whether the wiring has short-circuited. |
|
The gate starts moving, but the S.C.A. output does not work. |
Find out which type of function is programmed for the S.C.A. output and, if the output is supposed to flash, check whether there is voltage at it (approximately 24 Vdc). If there is voltage at the output, the problem is likely with the bulb. Try replacing it with a similar one to see if it works. If there is no voltage at the output, the S.C.A. output may be overloaded. Check whether the wiring has short-circuited. |
Diagnostics using warning-light flashes
During gate operation The warning light flashes regularly once per second. If a problem occurs, the warning light signals an error with two consecutive sequences of faster flashes.
|
Flash sequence |
Error |
Solution |
|---|---|---|
|
1 flash 1-second pause 1 flash |
BlueBUS error
|
The devices connected to the BlueBUS input do not match those detected during the device detection phase.. Run the detection phase again. If that does not help, try once more; otherwise, use the process of elimination to find the faulty device and replace it (purchase, return under warranty, or repair it). |
|
2 flashes 1-second pause 2 flashes |
Photocell activation |
The photocellshave been triggered, which is normal if their beam is interrupted while the gate is closing. If the beam was not interrupted, the photocells may be dirty, exposed to bright light, or faulty. |
|
3 flashes 1-second pause 3 flashes |
Motor force limiter activated
|
While the gate is moving, increased friction has been detected. The gate may not be properly adjusted; try moving it manually and readjusting it. Otherwise, it usually helps to increase the motor force, or enable the Kick-start function. Another possible problem is that the bottom stop is too high. |
|
4 flashes 1-second pause 4 flashes |
STOP input activated
|
A command was sent to the STOP input, so if this was unexpected, check the devices connected to it. |
|
5 flashes 1-second pause 5 flashes |
Internal control unit error |
Wait 30 seconds and try again. If the problem persists, try to reset it. Otherwise, the control unit will probably need to be repaired or replaced. |
|
6 flashes 1-second pause 6 flashes |
The hourly operation limit has been reached. |
Wait a few minutes for the cycle limiter to drop below the limit. |
|
7 flashes 1-second pause 7 flashes |
Internal electronic circuit error. |
Disconnect the entire drive for a few seconds and try again. If the problem persists, try to reset it. Otherwise, the control unit will probably need to be repaired or replaced. |
|
8 flashes 1-second pause 8 flashes |
Continuous command active.
|
A command is being continuously sent to the drive. Check the devices connected to the OPEN input. If a timer is connected, it is probably the source of the command.
|
Diagnostics using LED flashes
On the RBA3R10 control unit of the NICE Robus RB1000 drive, there are two sets of LEDs, each of which uses flashing or steady illumination to indicate normal control unit operation or diagnose errors, as shown in the tables below.
