Description of NICE M-Fab MFAB3000 – standalone underground operator for a swing gate leaf up to 3.5 m / 600 kg
NICE M-FAB MFAB3000 is a standalone underground non-reversible drive motor for one gate leaf, powered by 230 V AC. It does not include a control unit; for a new setup, use NICE MC800 with MCA5R30 board. Two motors and one compatible control unit are required for a double-leaf gate.
The underground drive is concealed beneath the hinge axis, preserving the gate leaf’s clean appearance. It is also suitable where there is no room for a linear or articulated-arm drive. Assess whether the gate is suitable based on its length, weight and operating conditions, not just the motor voltage.
Control unit and compatible accessories
The MC800 controls one or two 230 V motors. The motor power supply, warning light output and low-voltage accessories are separate circuits. Choose the receiver and photocells to match the control unit actually installed; do not apply MCA5R30 procedures to an older board just because it is called MC800.
| What | Why | Type |
|---|---|---|
| Control unit | Controls one or two motors. Wiring. |
|
| Warning light | Signals gate movement. The control unit determines the power supply and permitted current draw; output specifications. |
Other warning lights Choose one to match the voltage and maximum current draw of the FLASH output on the control unit actually installed. |
| Photocells | Protect the passage area according to the position and operating mode. Wiring and setup. |
Connect wired BlueBUS photocell pairs to BLUEBUS. EPMOW units require an IBW radio interface connected to BlueBUS; they are not wired directly like EPMB units. With FT210B, the transmitter on the gate leaf is battery-powered, and the receiver connects to BlueBUS with two wires. FT210B also transmits the safety edge status. Relay photocells connect to the contact inputs, not to BlueBUS. |
| Transmitter | Remote control. The coding type must match the receiver installed; Pairing. | |
| Receiver | Receiver for the SM control unit connector. OXIBD and OXILR use different radio systems; choose transmitters to match the receiver. |
|
| Antenna | Improves remote control reception. Connect the antenna to the installed receiver; for OXIBD, connect it directly to the antenna terminals. | |
| Keypad | Access by code. The wireless model must match the receiver; the wired model must match the interface type. | |
| Key switch | Key-operated control via a volt-free NO contact to the step, open or close input. | |
| Card readers | Access using a chip or card via a compatible control unit interface. |
|
| Electric locks | Additional leaf locking; lock output. |

Motor, box and release mechanism
| Assembly component | Features and purpose |
|---|---|
| MFAB3000 | One 230 V motor with a 2 m cable, connecting arm and mechanical closing stop. |
| Foundation box | MFABBOX made of cataphoresis-coated steel or stainless steel MFABBOXI. The box includes a mechanical opening stop; it is selected separately. |
| Manual release | NICE MEA2 using a key or NICE MEA3 using a lever. A suitable release mechanism is required for manual operation. |
| Controls and safety | MC800, photocells, receiver, remotes and warning light, depending on the gate configuration; these are not included with the motor alone. |
| Wide opening angle | NICE MEA1 for opening up to 360°; only for leaves up to 2.5 m, with suitable external stops. |
The box can be used with either a right-hand or left-hand leaf. For a kit, check the number and material of the boxes and whether MEA2 or MEA3 is selected; buying the motor alone does not automatically provide a complete assembly.
Leaf length and weight
When selecting a new assembly, allow for a leaf up to 3 m long. The 600 kg limit applies at a length of up to 2.5 m; the permissible weight decreases as the length increases, as shown in the graph. A leaf longer than 3 m, including assemblies listed for up to 3.5 m, requires confirmation that the specific configuration and installation conditions are suitable.
| Selection parameter | Limit |
|---|---|
| Length of one leaf | Up to 3 m for a new selection; longer gates must be assessed individually |
| Weight of one leaf | Maximum 600 kg for lengths up to 2.5 m; above 2.5 m, follow the decreasing limit shown in the graph |
| Solid infill and wind | Can significantly increase the load. A 230 V supply alone does not confirm that the specific gate is suitable. |
The leaf must be rigid, correctly balanced, and move manually along its entire travel with consistent resistance. The hinges must be coaxial, sharing the same axis as the box pin. For a leaf longer than 2.5 m an electric lock is recommended NICE PLA10 or NICE PLA11. Using two motors does not change the limit for a single leaf.
A speed of 1.14 rpm corresponds to approximately 13–14 seconds for 90° excluding acceleration and deceleration. The motor's duty cycle is 30%; this is not continuous operation. For 90°, the rating is 30 cycles/hour; at 180° with the MEA1 accessory, it is half that, or 15 cycles/hour. The duty duration and conditions for the complete assembly must also be observed.
Installing the box and mounting the motor
The box pin must be aligned with the axis of the leaf hinges. Position the box horizontally, at a height suitable for the specific assembly and surrounding surface. Provide a separate cable conduit and effective drainage. Detailed instructions for installing the foundation box.
- Prepare a pit to suit the box dimensions and local foundation conditions. The drainage must carry water away; it must not end in an impermeable pit.
- Before installation, attach the opening-stop accessory in the position shown in the illustration.
- Align the box pin with the hinge axis, prepare the conduit and drainage, and set the box in concrete horizontally.
- Fit the control bracket and the supplied ball onto the pin. Place the leaf against the release lever and secure it with a weld; grease the relevant point through the grease nipple.
- Insert the motor in the correct orientation, fit the closing stop, and secure it with four locknuts and washers.
- Connect the motor to the leaf using the connecting arm. Check manual movement, the stops, locking, and release.
- Route the cable out of the box to a suitable junction box; only then make the electrical connections.
The motor has a metal housing and an IP67 rating for temporary immersion. Water and dirt remaining in the box over a long period indicate a drainage fault, not normal operating conditions. Electrical connections must not be made inside the box.
Mechanical stops and opening angle
In the standard mechanical configuration, the opening angle is up to 110°. The closing stop is supplied with the motor, and the opening stop with the box. These are not electrical limit switches and are not connected to the control unit's FCA/FCC inputs.
For a wider opening angle of up to 360°, use NICE MEA1 with a gear wheel and chain. This accessory is intended for leaves up to 2.5 m. Suitable external stops and a clear, safe travel area are required; set the exact angle according to the complete installation.
Motor cable and connection to the MC800
The supplied cable is 2 m. Joining wires inside the foundation box is prohibited. Use a suitable junction box outside the box, accessible for inspection and protected from water. Disconnect the power supply before carrying out any work.
| MFAB3000 wire colour | Function and connection |
|---|---|
| Black | Switched opening live → OPEN of the corresponding M1 or M2 motor |
| Brown | Switched closing live → CLOSE of the corresponding M1 or M2 motor |
| Blue | Motor common wire → COMMON on the corresponding motor terminal block |
| Yellow-green | Protective conductor PE → protective earth |
Connect the motor to the 230 V AC output, not to the 24 V accessory supply. The motor has no magnetic encoder, and the black wire is not an ENC wire. The motor has a built-in 10 µF capacitor; do not add another one just because another model is wired that way.
With the MC800/MCA5R30, the motor cable must be 4 × 1.5 mm², with a maximum length of 10 m between the control unit and the motor. Determine the terminal order from the OPEN, COMMON and CLOSE markings on the specific board, not from the order of the wire colours in the cable. Complete motor connections to the MC800.
MC800/MCA5R30 accessory wiring and polarity
| Terminals | Voltage, polarity and purpose |
|---|---|
| 3 and 4 | 3 = minus (−), 0 V; 4 = plus (+), common +24 V DC. Accessory output: 200 mA maximum. |
| 5 OUT STB and 3 | 5 = positive (+), 3 = negative (−). 24 V DC, 4 W maximum; the output is switched off in Standby. Power to relay photocells also depends on the Phototest/Standby mode. |
| 6 and 7 BLUEBUS | Two-wire power supply and communication for compatible devices, such as EPMB. No polarity (+/−). |
| FLASH | Switched 230 V AC mains voltage, 21 W maximum, for example ELAC. No polarity (+/−); this is not a 12 V output ELDC. |
| 1 and 2 EL | 12 V AC, 15 VA maximum for an electric lock. No polarity (+/−). |
| 4 and 13 SbS | Voltage-free NO contact for step-by-step commands. The external module must not send its own voltage to the input. |
| AUX 8–11 | Optional input function, depending on the setting. For relay photocells, select the appropriate mode rather than simply connecting them to any AUX input. |
The diagram shows relay photocells without Phototest, with Standby disabled. For other modes, use the appropriate relay photocell wiring. EPMB and relay-type EPM are not electrically interchangeable.
EPM relay photocells at 24 V DC
On both the transmitter and receiver EPM is terminal 1 positive (+), terminal 2 negative (−). On the RX, 4 is the common COM contact and 5 is the NC contact; terminal 3 is NO. In the specified mode without Phototest, they are powered from terminals 4 (+) and 3 (−) on the control unit. Connect the RX contact between common terminal 4 and the selected, correctly programmed AUX input. The COM/NC contact pair is voltage-free and has no power-supply polarity.
Initial startup and gate inspection
Before switching on, the gate must move freely by hand along its full travel, the box must be drained, the stops must be set, and the drive must be locked. Check the protective earth conductor, cable routing, photocells and protection of hazardous areas. Installation, mains wiring and safety testing must be carried out by a qualified technician.
- Disconnect the mains and any battery, then check all connections; there must be no electrical connectors inside the box.
- Restore the power supply. On the specified current control unit, the BlueBUS LED should flash regularly once per second, the TX/RX photocell LEDs should flash, and the FLASH beacon should remain off. If the status is incorrect, disconnect the power and resolve the cause.
- Run device recognition, then teach the leaf positions on the board actually installed.
- Check the direction of movement, both end positions, deceleration and the correct sequence for overlapping leaves.
- Test each safety device in its operating position and measure forces across the entire gate.
- Hand over the working manual release, keys, instructions and inspection schedule. Use the gate only after the complete system has passed testing.
The MFAB3000 uses mechanical stops, not electrical limit switches. The AUX setting on the MC800 must match the connected accessory; a mechanical stop is not connected as an FCA/FCC contact. Selecting the AUX input function.
Recognizing connected devices
On the specified current control unit, press and hold OPEN ▲ and STOP/SET together for approximately 3 seconds. Release them when L1 and L2 start flashing rapidly. Wait for the process to finish: the STOP LED will remain lit and L1/L2 will turn off. Device recognition must be performed even when no devices are connected and repeated after adding or removing devices.
Automatic position learning
On the MC800/MCA5R30, first check that the motor force is appropriate – parameter L6. Then press and hold CLOSE ▼ and STOP/SET for approximately 3 seconds; release them when L3/L4 flash rapidly. For a double-leaf gate, the sequence is: close M1, close M2, open M2, open M1, close M1 and close M2. When complete, L3/L4 will turn off.
If the first movement is in the wrong direction, stop the learning process immediately using the OPEN or CLOSE button. Correct the wiring only after disconnecting the power, then repeat the learning process. Activation of a photocell or STOP input interrupts learning and L1 starts flashing; resolve the cause and start again. Older boards may use a different procedure.
Control unit settings, remote controls and servicing
| What you need to set | Procedure for the relevant control unit |
|---|---|
| Device recognition | Device recognition |
| Travel learning | Travel learning |
| Relay photocells and AUX | Relay photocells and AUX |
| Automatic closing and pause | Automatic closing and pause |
| Motor force | Motor force |
| Pairing remote controls | Pairing remote controls |

Do not try to fix sticking hinges or a flooded box by increasing the force setting. After changing positions, stops or force settings, check safety again. Deleting remote controls and resetting the board are different procedures; follow the procedure for the control unit actually installed.
When the drive is not operating correctly
| Symptom | What to check |
|---|---|
| The leaf is difficult to move even when the drive is released. | Hinges, box alignment, deformation and stops. First eliminate the mechanical cause; installation. |
| Water is standing in the box | Disconnect the power supply. Clean and check the drainage; maintenance. Damaged electrical components must be inspected by a technician. |
| The motor does not start or stops | Power supply and fuses on the control unit, STOP and photocell status, fault indicator. Do not bypass the safety devices; diagnostics. |
| The gate leaf moves, but the motor is running | Check that the manual release is engaged and that the motor is mechanically connected to the gate leaf. Re-engaging and returning to operation. |
| The gate leaf moves in the wrong direction | After disconnecting the power supply, check the motor wires and perform a new learning cycle; motor wiring. |
| Only the radio remote control is failing | Check the transmitter battery, coding compatibility, antenna, and whether the button is programmed to the correct receiver. |
Maintenance and safe use
Carry out an inspection at least every six months, and more often in demanding conditions, as advised by the technician. Disconnect both the mains supply and the backup power source before carrying out any work, and secure the gate leaf against movement.
- Clean the box and drainage; water and dirt must not obstruct the mechanism.
- Check the attachment of the motor, gate leaf and stops, as well as the condition of the cables and manual release.
- Check lubrication of mechanical contact points as specified in the installation procedure.
- Repeat the manual travel test and test the photocells and other safety devices.
- Have a technician measure the forces and carry out repairs; do not use a damaged assembly.
The gate must remain under supervision while moving. Keep remote controls out of children's reach, stay clear of the travel path, and use the safe manual release in the event of a fault. If the gate leaf has a pedestrian gate, opening it must prevent the operator from running.
Manual release and returning to operation
In the event of a power failure, the gate can be moved manually using the selected mechanism NICE MEA2 or NICE MEA3. First switch off the power supply and secure the gate leaf against unintended movement.
| Mechanism | Release |
|---|---|
| MEA2 – key | Flip open the lock cover, insert the key and turn it 90° clockwise. Move the gate leaf manually. To re-engage the mechanism, turn the key 90° in the opposite direction. |
| MEA3 – lever | Insert the lever into the release mechanism and turn it in the direction indicated in the illustration. Move the gate leaf manually, then return the mechanism to the locked position. |
After re-engaging the mechanism, check that the operator is connected to the gate leaf and that it moves safely. If the release mechanism does not operate easily, do not force it; have a technician inspect the assembly.
