Description of NICE Moonclever MC824HR30 – new control unit for 24V swing gate operators in the Toona range
Wiring and setting up the NICE MC824HR30 control unit
NICE Moonclever MC824HR30 is the successor to the MC824HR10 for single- and double-leaf gates. The Moonclever box contains an MCA1R30 board (SPMCA1R30). The control unit is powered by 230 V AC and controls compatible 24 V DC operators with a magnetic encoder.
The MC824HR30 belongs to the MC824H type. The MC824L version uses different motors, so the operator selection and encoder wiring below apply to the HR30. For a double-leaf gate, M2 opens first and M1 closes first. For a single-leaf gate, connect the motor to M2.

Installing the control unit and wiring
Secure the box to a solid vertical surface so that its bottom edge is at least 40 cm above the ground. Prevent water from entering through the cable routes. According to the manufacturer, the side cable entry is intended only for a protected indoor environment; outdoors, use the prepared bottom entries with suitable cable glands.
| Purpose | Cable and maximum length |
|---|---|
| Control unit power supply | 3 × 1.5 mm²; up to 30 m. For lengths over 30 m, the manufacturer specifies 3 × 2.5 mm² and grounding at the automation system. |
| Each motor | 3 × 1.5 mm²; up to 10 m. |
| Encoder for each motor | 2 × 1 mm²; up to 10 m. The motor and encoder cables can be replaced with a single 5 × 1.5 mm² cable, as specified in the manual. |
| BlueBUS | 2 × 0.5 mm²; up to 20 m. For 20–40 m, use 2 × 1 mm². |
| Flashing light | 2 × 0.5 mm²; up to 20 m. |
| Antenna | RG58 coaxial cable; up to 20 m, recommended length under 5 m. |
| Key switch | Two 2 × 0.5 mm² cables or one 4 × 0.5 mm² cable; up to 50 m. |
| Electric lock | 2 × 1 mm²; up to 10 m. |
The specified conductor cross-sections apply to the stated lengths. For longer runs, select a cable based on the actual length, installation method and power supply circuit.
MC824HR30 terminals and wiring diagram
Disconnect both the mains supply and the backup battery before changing the wiring. Follow the labels printed directly on the MC824HR30 board; terminal numbering from other control units does not apply here.
TX and RX in the diagram are BlueBUS photocells. The antenna connection on the board applies to OXI; with OXIBD, the antenna connects directly to the receiver, as shown in the radio section. Click the image to enlarge it.
| Terminal | Use |
|---|---|
| L / N / PE | 230 V AC mains supply and protective earth, as marked in the power supply section. Do not connect to the low-voltage inputs. |
| M1 + ENC1 | Motor for the gate leaf that moves first when closing, and its encoder. |
| M2 + ENC2 | Motor for the gate leaf that moves first when opening, and its encoder. For a single-leaf gate, connect the motor to M2; leave M1 unused. |
| FLASH | Flashing light output; in flashing-light mode, 12 V DC, max. 21 W. The manufacturer specifies NICE ELDC. This is not a 230 V output. |
| ELS | Electric lock output, 12 V AC, max. 15 VA. Changing the function to lighting also changes the output's electrical parameters. |
| OGI | Open gate indicator: 24 V, max. 4 W; voltage may vary by −30 to +50%. |
| BlueBUS | Two wires for both power and communication for compatible devices; connect in parallel, with no polarity requirement. |
| STOP | Safety input for NO, NC or 8.2 kΩ. During setup, the control unit stores the connected state; a change triggers a stop and brief reverse movement. |
| SbS / OPEN / CLOSE | Control inputs for volt-free NO contacts: step-by-step, open and close. Do not apply an external voltage to these inputs. |
| 24 V DC for additional devices | The minus (−) terminal is the right-hand terminal of the STOP pair; the plus (+) terminal is the left-hand terminal of the SbS pair, when viewing the terminal blocks with the STOP and SbS labels. Maximum total current draw: 200 mA. This power supply remains available in Standby; the BlueBUS terminals are separate and have no polarity. |
| SM / IBT4N | Plug-in receiver connector / service interface connector. Insert accessories with the power disconnected. |
Motors and encoders
Each encoder must be assigned to the correct motor. Polarity is irrelevant at the two-wire ENC input. If the gate leaves are found to be in the wrong order during setup, swap their encoders as well as their motors. Do not confuse the protective earth conductor with the motor wires.
Push button and key switch
For standard control, connect an NO contact to the SbS terminal pair. For the NICE EKS switch, use the C and NO contacts of the selected microswitch. The command sequence is determined by parameter L2 in the second level. Separate commands can be connected to OPEN and CLOSE. Function L7 in the first level can change the CLOSE input to partial opening.
STOP input
Connect multiple NO contacts in parallel and multiple NC contacts in series. Combinations with 8.2 kΩ safety edges have their own wiring, depending on the edge type. If STOP indicates a fault, check the contact and wiring rather than permanently bridging the input.
BlueBUS photocells
For a basic pair, use a compatible TX transmitter and RX receiver, for example NICE EPMB. Connect both devices in parallel to BlueBUS using two wires. These are not relay photocells with COM/NC contacts; wiring for EPM or BF photocells from another control unit does not apply here.
- Position TX and RX opposite each other according to the area to be protected.
- Set the addressing jumpers according to the required function. TX and RX in a pair must have the same address; each additional pair must have a different address.
- Connect both BlueBUS wires; polarity is irrelevant.
- Run the learning procedure for the connected devices and test each pair while the gate is moving.

Determine the exact jumper positions from the markings on the specific photocells. Repeat the learning procedure for connected devices whenever a device is added, removed or replaced.
Initial start-up and gate travel learning
1. Select the motor type
With the power disconnected, set the selector according to the exact drive model. Complete this setting before teaching the mechanical stops. Use only the combination specified by the manufacturer.
The image shows the motor settings for the MC824H. Set the switch position according to the ON marking in the image and on the control unit selector. Click the image to enlarge it.
2. Check the mechanism and perform the initial power-up
Check the stops, free movement and drive lockout according to the respective manuals. After power-up, the BlueBUS LED should flash regularly about once per second, the photocell TX/RX LEDs should flash, and the warning light should be off. If anything is abnormal, disconnect the power and check the wiring.
3. Program the connected devices
Buttons and indicators used to detect BlueBUS and STOP devices. Click to enlarge the image.
- Press and hold Open ▲ + Stop/Set.
- When L1 and L2 start flashing rapidly, after about 3 seconds, release the buttons.
- Wait for the process to finish. The STOP LED should be on; L1 and L2 should be off. L3 and L4 may indicate that the travel limits still need to be programmed.
This step is required even when no devices are connected to BlueBUS or STOP.
4. Automatically program the mechanical stops
- Press and hold Stop/Set + Close ▼.
- Release the buttons only when L3 and L4 flash rapidly, after about 5 seconds. Releasing earlier, when L1 flashes, starts manual programming.
- Check the movement sequence: M1 closes slowly, M2 closes slowly, M2 and M1 open slowly to the stops, and finally both leaves close quickly.
- When the process completes correctly, L3 and L4 go out. Test opening and closing each leaf individually using the buttons.
If the direction or sequence is incorrect: stop the programming process using the Open or Close button. Disconnect all power before correcting the wiring. If the leaves are swapped, correct both the M1/M2 connections and the corresponding ENC connections; if the direction is reversed, swap only the motor wires according to the original diagram. Then repeat the programming process. Activation of a photocell or STOP input interrupts the programming process.
You do not need to clear the entire memory as a precaution before repeating the programming process.
Manually fine-tune the leaf positions
If automatic programming does not suit the gate geometry, you can fine-tune the positions manually. Mixed mode follows the previous automatic programming and fine-tunes selected intermediate positions; the mechanical end positions 0 and 1 remain unchanged.
SA and SC define the timing between leaf movements; A is the required open position. Click to enlarge the image.
| LEDs during manual programming | Position |
|---|---|
| L1 | M1 closed mechanical stop (0). |
| L2 | M2 closed mechanical stop (0). |
| L3 | SA: the M2 position after which M1 starts moving when opening. |
| L4 | Required open position A for motor M1. |
| L5 | Required open position A for motor M2. |
| L6 | SC: the M1 position after which M2 starts closing. |
| L7 | M1 open mechanical stop (1). |
| L8 | M2 open mechanical stop (1). |
To enter manual programming, hold Stop/Set + Close and release when L1 flashes, after about 3 seconds. Briefly press Open/Close to select a position; press and hold to move the corresponding motor. To save the position, hold Stop/Set for at least 3 seconds; then proceed to the next one. Allow no more than 10 seconds between steps.
On a single-leaf gate, unused positions are skipped. Follow the LED sequence in the table and save only the positions for the connected M2 motor.
Programming functions and parameters
Use the Open ▲ and Close ▼ buttons to select an item; Stop/Set confirms or changes the setting. Level I switches a function on or off; Level II sets its value. For example, L1 in Level I enables automatic closing, while L1 in Level II sets the pause duration.
Level I – switch on/off
- With the gate stationary, hold Stop/Set until L1 starts flashing, then release it.
- Use Open/Close to select the required LED.
- Briefly press Stop/Set to change the state: short flash = OFF, long flash = ON.
- When finished, wait for programming mode to end.
| LED – function | ON state and effect |
|---|---|
| L1 – Automatic closing Closes after the set pause. | After opening, the pause countdown starts and the gate then closes. |
| L2 – Close after photocell activation Shortens or starts the pause after the photocell is triggered. | When automatic closing is enabled, shortens the pause to 5 s. When it is disabled, triggering the photocell can start closing after the set pause. |
| L3 – Always close Response when power is restored. | If the gate is open, the control unit closes it with pre-flashing after power is restored. |
| L4 – Standby all Energy-saving mode; enabled by default on the MC824HR30. | After a period of inactivity, it switches off BlueBUS and most LEDs. Battery requirements are described in Standby and backup. |
| L5 – Lock / lighting Changes the function of the ELS output. | ON: auxiliary lighting. OFF: electric lock; if changing the setting, check the specifications of the connected load. |
| L6 – Pre-flashing Warning before movement. | The warning light starts flashing 3 s before movement begins. |
| L7 – CLOSE / partial opening Changes the function of the CLOSE input. | The CLOSE input issues a Partial Open 1 command instead of a closing command. |
| L8 – OGI / maintenance Changes the function of the OGI output. | The output signals that maintenance is required instead of indicating that the gate is open. |
Level II – set a value
- Hold Stop/Set until L1 flashes, then release it. Use Open/Close to select a parameter.
- Press and hold Stop/Set again. After about 3 seconds, the LED for the current value lights up.
- Keep holding Stop/Set and use Open/Close to select a value.
- Release Stop/Set and wait for the mode to end. Then test the function.
| Input LED – parameter | Setting LED – value |
|---|---|
| L1 – Pause time The time before automatic closing; effective only when Level I/L1 is enabled. | L1 – 5 s L2 – 15 s L3 – 30 s L4 – 45 s L5 – 60 s L6 – 80 s L7 – 120 s L8 – 180 s |
| L2 – Step-by-step Sequence of SbS, OPEN, CLOSE and radio commands. For L4, L5, L7 and L8, the behavior of OPEN and CLOSE also changes. | L1 – open–stop–close–stop L2 – open–stop–close–open L3 – open–close–open–close L4 – condominium L5 – condominium 2; a command held for more than 2 s stops the gate L6 – step-by-step 2; a brief command of up to 2 s partially opens the gate L7 – movement only while the command is held L8 – semi-automatic opening; hold to close |
| L3 – Motor speed Speed during normal operation. | L1 – very slow L2 – slow L3 – medium L4 – fast L5 – very fast L6 – extremely fast L7 – opens fast, closes slowly L8 – opens extremely fast, closes at medium speed |
| L4 – Pressure relief after closing A brief reverse movement of both motors reduces residual pressure. | L1 – no pressure relief L2 – level 1, approximately 100 ms L3 – level 2 L4 – level 3 L5 – level 4 L6 – level 5 L7 – level 6 L8 – level 7, approximately 800 ms |
| L5 – Motor force Shared force setting for both motors; check the mechanism before increasing it. | L1 – level 1 – minimum L2 – level 2 L3 – level 3 L4 – level 4 L5 – level 5 L6 – level 6 L7 – level 7 L8 – level 8 – maximum |
| L6 – Partial opening Range of the Partial Open 1 command. For both leaves, the proportion is calculated from the smaller configured opening. | L1 – M2 to ¼ L2 – M2 to ½ L3 – M2 to ¾ L4 – M2 fully open L5 – both leaves to ¼ L6 – both leaves to ½ L7 – both leaves to ¾ L8 – both leaves to the smaller full opening |
| L7 – Maintenance interval Number of cycles before the maintenance signal. | L1 – 500 L2 – 1,000 L3 – 1,500 L4 – 2,500 L5 – 5,000 L6 – 10,000 L7 – 15,000 L8 – 20,000 |
| L8 – Fault history Results of the last eight cycles; L1 is the most recent. | L1 – 1st cycle – most recent L2 – 2nd cycle L3 – 3rd cycle L4 – 4th cycle L5 – 5th cycle L6 – 6th cycle L7 – 7th cycle L8 – 8th cycle |
In step-by-step modes L4 and L5, an SbS or OPEN command during opening has no effect, while CLOSE reverses the direction; during closing, SbS or OPEN reverses the direction, while CLOSE has no effect. L5 also stops movement if the command is held for more than 2 s. L7 requires the command to be held throughout the movement; L8 requires it only while closing.
Example – closing after 60 seconds: At level I, switch on L1. Then at level II, enter parameter L1 and select value L5. If the close-after-photocell function is also enabled, the pause may be shortened.
Do not leave a long pause between programming steps; the control unit will return to normal mode afterward.
Radio receiver, antenna and remote controls
Remote control operation depends on the receiver installed. For the plug-in NICE OXIBD use the SM connector. The radio-symbol button on the MC824H panel is not used; pair the remote control with the relevant receiver.
A compatible remote control for the OXIBD receiver available from us, for example, is the NICE ON3EBD. When expanding an existing setup, also check the coding and receiver mode already in use; matching frequency alone is not enough.
For OXIBD, connect the external antenna with RG58 coaxial cable directly to receiver terminals 1 and 2, not to the control board’s antenna terminal. Click the image to enlarge it.
Choose the procedure for storing the remote control according to the specific receiver in the NICE remote control pairing guide. Adding a remote control does not require erasing the control unit’s travel settings.
Standby and backup power
The Standby all (L4 at level I) function is enabled by default on the MC824HR30. Approximately 5 minutes after a movement has been completed correctly, it switches off the BlueBUS power supply and most indicator LEDs; the BlueBUS indicator then flashes more slowly. After receiving a command, the unit returns to normal operation after a short delay, so slower flashing after inactivity is not a fault. If a backup battery is connected, Standby is activated only after the battery has finished charging.
| Battery | Connection requirements |
|---|---|
| PSS324 | Current type specified by the manufacturer. Use the relevant instructions and the cable supplied for this setup; NICE PSS324 details. |
| Older PS324 | Use NICE CABLA11 and disable Standby (L4 = OFF). The adapter alone is not enough. Allow for higher power consumption. |
Connect the battery with the mains power disconnected. The radio receiver, service interface and accessories that remain powered increase power consumption, so battery runtime varies depending on the specific setup.
Solemyo: solar power is connected via the battery connector. Standby all must be active; do not connect mains power at the same time as the solar setup. The requirements for the older PS324 do not apply to it.
Troubleshooting common problems
When troubleshooting, note the LED status and the number of short flashes from the beacon. The fault sequence repeats twice, with a pause of approximately one second. Leave resetting until the last step, as it will erase the stored settings.
| Short flashes | Meaning and first check |
|---|---|
| 1 | BlueBUS device mismatch. Check the connections and addresses; after changing the setup, run device recognition. |
| 2 | Photocell triggered. Check for obstructions, cleanliness, and correct alignment of TX/RX. |
| 3 | Obstruction detected based on force. First check for mechanical resistance and ensure free movement. |
| 4 | STOP active. Check the safety device and its wiring. |
| 5 / 7 | Internal parameter / electrical circuit fault. Wait at least 30 s; if the fault recurs, servicing is required. |
| 6 | The number of operations per hour or continuously has been exceeded. Let the system rest for a few minutes. |
| 8 | A continuously active command is blocking further commands. Check the button, relay, or timer control. |
| 9 | The automation system is blocked by a command. The corresponding command is required to unblock it. |
| 10 | Obstruction or increased resistance detected by the MC824H encoder. Check the mechanics and make sure the correct encoder is connected to the motor. |
What the LEDs on the control board indicate
| Indicator | Meaning |
|---|---|
| BlueBUS flashes once per second | Normal operation. Slower flashing after inactivity may indicate Standby. |
| BlueBUS – two quick flashes | An input change or command received; this is not a fault in itself. |
| STOP lit / unlit | Lit: the learned safety status is OK. Unlit: check STOP and the connected devices. |
| SbS / OPEN / CLOSE lit | The corresponding control input is active. If it stays lit without a command, this may explain why the controls are blocked. |
| L1 + L2 flash slowly | The connected devices need to be recognized. |
| L3 + L4 flash slowly | The travel path has not been learned, or the motor selector setting was changed after learning. Check the selector and repeat the relevant learning procedure. |
| Neither LED nor BlueBUS is lit | Check the power supply and fuses. The MC824H has a 15 A motor fuse and an F 2 A service fuse; check the rating and type on the control board. Do not replace the fuse with one of a higher rating. |
The gate works using the buttons but not with the remote control
Check the power supply and installation of the radio receiver, remote compatibility, its battery, and whether it has been programmed. If the range is poor, also check the antenna connection point. First determine whether the problem is with the radio signal or the control unit.
History of the last eight operations
In Level II, select L8 and hold Stop/Set. When L1 lights up, use Open/Close to select a record; L1 indicates the most recent one. Read the number of flashes using the diagnostic information above. For detailed instructions, see section 7.3.
Clearing the control unit memory
This clears the individual settings. Press and hold Open + Close together until L1 and L2 start flashing, then release the buttons. Then repeat device learning, travel learning, and custom programming. This procedure does not erase the memory of the plug-in radio receiver.
Checks after setup and routine maintenance
- Test opening, closing, and stopping using each control device in use.
- Check the leaf sequence, stops, acceleration, and deceleration.
- Test each pair of photocells, the safety edge, and STOP separately while the gate is moving.
- After adjusting the force or speed, test the gate through its full travel.
- If a battery is connected, test gate movement during a power outage and when mains power is restored.
Inspect the gate and its accessories at least every 6 months, or sooner if it is used more frequently. If the power supply fails, manually release the drives as described in their instructions; the MC824HR30 control unit does not have its own mechanical release key.
Information for technical support
When reporting a problem, provide the control unit and both motor model designations, the types of photocells and receiver, the LED status, the number of flashes, and the step at which the problem occurs. A photo of the complete wiring and a close-up of the rating plate are helpful.
