Description of NICE Moonclever MC824H - control unit for 24V swing gate operators in the Toona range
Available replacement!
The NICE Moonclever MC824H control unit has been replaced by a newer model - NICE Moonclever MC824HR10.
NICE Moonclever MC824H is a control unit for automating single-leaf, or double-leaf gates. Drives compatible with it must have a 24Vdc and a magnetic encoder (a rotary motor speed sensor for precise detection of the gate leaf position).
Compatible exclusively with the specifically listed swing gate drives:
- Metro (ME3024)
- Moby (MB4024, MB5024)
- Hyppo (HY7024, HY7124)
- Toona (TO4024, TO5024, TO7024)
- X-Metro (XME2124)
- Big-Metro (BM5024)
- Metroelite
- Wingoelite
The MC824H control unit includes the MCA1 control unit, which is housed in a purpose-designed plastic box Moonclever. It includes an SM connector for connecting radio signal receiver (SMXI, OXI, ...) from remote controls (Flor, Era Flor, Era One, Era Inti, ...).
Supports BlueBus, which makes it easy to connect accessories (photocells, warning light, card readers, key switches, etc.) using just a two-core cable, with no need to observe polarity.
Thanks to 24V it is also suitable for the NICE Solemyo solar power system, which provides power even in locations without access to an electricity supply. It is also possible to power the control unit from the NICE PS324 backup battery, which allows several opening and closing cycles of the swing gate for a few hours after a power failure. When standby mode is enabled, the control unit with a connected control signal receiver uses only 2W (when powered by a PS324 battery, or Solemyo solar system, consumption is just 0.1W).
Supports NICE Opera technology. Diagnostics using warning light.
Once the gate leaf length has been detected, the acceleration and deceleration intervals for opening and closing are set automatically; you can also set the force, speed, pedestrian opening etc. See programming the control unit. Obstacle detection throughout the gate leaf’s entire movement ensures safe operation of the motors.
NICE Moonclever MC824H control unit is suitable for the climate in Slovakia and meets all European safety standards.

Gate operator photocells
Highly user-friendly BlueBUS technology allows you to power and control up to 7 pairs of photocells using a two-core cable.
WIRING MULTIPLE PAIRS OF PHOTOCELLS NICE MOFB TO THE DATA NETWORK NICE BLUEBUS
Position the photocells around the gate or gates according to the example configurations for the complete wiring, and set the jumpers according to the jumper table for the NICE MOFB gate operator. To prevent interference between pairs positioned close to one another, make sure to follow these example configurations, and observe the orientation of the transmitters TX and receivers RX. Connect the photocells in parallel as shown (polarity does not matter):
Example photocell installation configuration
If you need the photocells to operate as gate openers (see FA1 and FA2 in the figure), i.e. to open the gate when a vehicle passes between their optical axes, you must break connection A on the transmitter TX and receiver RX, see figure:
Jumper table for NICE MOFB gate operator photocells
![]() |
Connecting multiple pairs of photocells to the BlueBUS system is done by setting different jumper combinations, with each connected pair requiring a unique jumper configuration. Make sure that no two pairs have the same configuration on a single BlueBUS data network. For each pair of photocells, set the jumper on both the transmitter TX and receiver RX to the same value. If the jumper type uses only one jumper, always store the other one in the unused jumper compartment, as shown in the figure on the left. |

Radio receiver for gate operators
![]() |
NICE Moonclever MC824H control unit is supplied with the NICE MCA1 control unit, which provides an SM connector for connecting an external radio receiver (e.g. NICE OXI, NICE SMXI). This receiver is essential for detecting commands transmitted by from the remote controls, and is therefore required to operate the sliding gate remotely remote control. |
Recognising the connected drive devices
After connecting, disconnecting or changing the wiring of any accessories on the BlueBUS inputs and STOP the accessory recognition procedure must be carried out. The drive will alert you that this procedure needs to be carried out by flashing LEDs L1 and L2.
|
Recognising gate leaf movement (automatic mode)
For the gate to operate correctly (in particular, to calculate the acceleration and deceleration distances and partial opening), the control unit must determine the gate leaf travel length during opening. During this procedure, the drive moves the gate from one stop to the other and measures the gate opening travel. Alternative manual and combined methods are also available; see the manual.

Programming the operator control unit
The MC824H control unit allows several functions to be programmed, either by switching a function on or off by Level I programming., or by setting a preset parameter by Level II programming.
MCA1 control unit has three buttons for operating and programming the operator:
![]() |
Button | Function |
|---|---|---|
| Open | The button allows you to send the operator a command to open the gate. It is also used during programming to move the programmed parameter value up. | |
| Stop/Set | The button allows you to send the operator a command to stop the gate. Press and hold it for 5 seconds to enter Level I programming. Press and hold it again to enter Level II programming. for the current LED. | |
| Close | The button allows you to send the operator a command to close the gate. It is also used during programming to move the programmed parameter value down. |
Level I programming.
At Level I, programming switches the selected function on or off. When a function is enabled, the corresponding LED on the control unit lights up. All functions are disabled by default.
To enter Level I programming, press and hold the “Stop/Set” button for about 5 seconds, until LED L1 starts flashing. Then use the “Open” and “Close” buttons to move the current LED up or down, respectively. You have 10 seconds for each operation; otherwise, the operator will exit programming mode. Once the flashing LED is positioned above the LED for the function you want to enable or disable, press the “Stop/Set” button once to make the flashing faster (function enabled) or slower (function disabled), then leave it as it is so the operator exits programming mode within 10 seconds. If everything has gone correctly, the LED for the selected function will remain lit.
List of programmable functions that can be enabled:
| LED | Function | Description |
|---|---|---|
| L1 | Automatic closing | After a certain time (set in “Level II Programming – Pause duration”), the gate will start closing automatically after it has opened. If this function is disabled, the gate can only be operated by a command from a gate remote control and so on. |
| L2 | Close after photocells are cleared |
This function keeps the gate open only for the time needed for a vehicle to pass through. Once the photocells are cleared (after the vehicle has passed through), the gate will start closing automatically after 5 seconds. This function behaves in two different ways, depending on whether automatic closing is enabled (see the previous function). Automatic closing enabled — the gate stops when the photocells are cleared and starts closing after 5 seconds. This means it does not have to open all the way. |
| L3 | Always close | After a power failure, the gate either remains in its current position (if this function is disabled) or closes (if it is enabled). |
| L4 | Standby mode | This function reduces power consumption to a minimum. It is ideal when using a backup battery (e.g. NICE PS124). When this function is enabled, one minute after the gate last moves, the control unit switches off the BlueBUS input (and therefore all devices connected to it) and all LEDs except the BlueBUS LED, which will flash slowly. In this state, if a command is received, control unit will restart first and then carry out the command. |
| L5 | Electric lock/Automatic lighting | If this function is disabled, the ELS output acts as an electric lock; if the function is enabled, the ELS output can be used for automatic lighting. |
| L6 | Pre-flashing | After a gate movement command is received, the warning light flashes for three seconds to warn people nearby before the requested movement cycle starts. |
| L7 | Close means Partial opening | The close always starts a gate movement cycle. |
| L8 | Gate-open indicator/Maintenance indicator | If this function is disabled, the S.C.A. output functions as a gate-open indicator; if the function is enabled, the S.C.A. output functions as a maintenance indicator. |
Level II programming.
At Level II, programming sets values for the functions (these functions differ from those in Level I.).
Forget about Level I programming. Enter Level II programming by holding down the button “Stop/Set” for approximately 5 seconds, until LED L1. Then use the buttons “Open” and “Close” to move the current LED up or down, respectively. You have 10 seconds for each action; otherwise, the drive will exit programming mode. Once the flashing LED is above the function LED whose parameter you want to set, press and hold the “Stop/Set” button to enter the setting for that LED. The LED that remains lit (while you continue holding “Stop/Set”) indicates the current parameter value. You can change this value up or down using the “Open” and “ "Close” buttons, respectively (while continuing to hold the “Stop/Set” button). Then release “Stop/Set” and wait for the drive to exit programming mode within 10 seconds. To check that everything went as expected, repeat the procedure without changing the parameter value.

Connecting additional external devices to the drive
![]() |
If you need to connect additional devices to the drive that require an external power supply (e.g. indicator lighting, key switch, card readers, etc.), connect the device as shown in the diagram. The supplied voltage is 24 V DC, −30% to +50%, with a maximum current of 200 mA. |
Special control unit functions
Memory erasure
Press the buttons “Open” and “Close” and hold them until L1 and L2 start flashing.
Forced operation
If a safety device fails, or, for example, an obstruction that cannot be removed gets into the beam of the photocells and the gate will not move for safety reasons, you can activate “Hold-to-run” mode, either permanently in Level II Programming in the setting L2 - Step-by-step mode to the value L7 - Hold-to-run, or temporarily:
- Send a command to the gate (using aremote control, key switch or similar).
- If there is a problem, the gate will not move and the beacon will probably signal an error..
- So, within 3 seconds of the previous command, send the command again and hold it.
- The gate will move while you hold the command and stop when you release it.
Maintenance alert
In Level II Programming , item L7 - Maintenance reminder sets the number of cycles after which the drive should signal that maintenance (inspection) is required. The drive signals this using the beacon (or at the S.C.A. output, if configured in Level II Programming under item L4 - Output indicator level L7 - Maintenance) as follows:
| Number of cycles | Beacon signal | S.C.A. output indicator signal |
|---|---|---|
| less than 80% of the limit | Normal operation, flashing at half-second intervals. | “Lights up” for 2 seconds after opening starts. |
| 80–100% of the limit | Lights up for 2 seconds after the maneuver starts, then resumes normal operation. | Flashes during the maneuver. |
| over 100% of the limit | Lights up for 2 seconds after the maneuver starts, then resumes normal operation, and lights up for 2 seconds after the maneuver ends. | Flashes continuously. |
For instructions on clearing the maintenance alert and checking the current number of maneuvers against the limit, see Table 12 in the manual.
Troubleshooting the drive
If anything is unclear or you have any other problem, feel free to contact our technical support team for NICE drives.
Depending on the nature of the problem
During installation (or if the drive fails), you may encounter one of the following problems:
|
Problem |
Possible solution |
|---|---|
|
The gate does not respond to the remote control, and the LED on the remote control does not light up. |
Check that the batteries in the drive remote control are in good condition; if not, replace them. For instructions, see the manual for the specific remote control. |
|
The gate does not respond to the remote control, but the LED on the remote control lights up. |
Check whether the remote control has been stored in the receiver memory correctly, or try remote control storing it again. |
|
The gate does not move and the BlueBUS LED does not flash.
|
Check whether the drive is receiving 230 V power. If it is, test both fuses and, if necessary, replace them with new ones with the same specifications. |
|
The gate does not move and the warning light does not flash. |
Check whether the command has been registered by the drive at all. When a command is sent using the remote control, the BlueBUS LED should flash twice quickly. BlueBUS LED flash twice quickly. If the command is sent by another device via the STEP-BY-STEP input (P.P.), the corresponding STEP-BY-STEP LED. |
|
The gate does not move and the warning light flashes several times. |
Count the flashes and see Diagnostics using warning light flashes. |
|
The gate starts moving, but stops immediately and starts moving in the opposite direction. |
The programmed motor force is probably too low for your gate. Check that there are no obstacles obstructing the gate, and increase the drive force if necessary. |
|
The gate starts moving, but the warning light does not work. |
Check whether there is voltage at the FLASH output during gate operation (the voltage level is not important, approx. 10-30Vdc). If there is voltage at the output, the problem is probably with the warning light, try replacing it with a similar one to see if it works. If there is no voltage at the output, the FLASH output may be overloaded. Check whether the wiring has short-circuited. |
|
The gate starts moving, but the S.C.A. output does not work. |
Find out the type of function programmed for the S.C.A. output and, if the output is supposed to flash, check whether there is voltage at it (approximately 24Vdc). If there is voltage at the output, the problem is probably with the bulb. Try replacing it with a similar one to see if it works. If there is no voltage at the output, the S.C.A. output may be overloaded. Check whether the wiring has short-circuited. |
Diagnostics using warning light flashes
During gate operation, the warning light flashes regularly once every second. If a problem occurs, the warning light signals the error with two quick successive sequences of flashes.
|

BlueBUS error
|
The devices connected to the BlueBUS input do not match those detected during the device detection phase.. Run the detection phase again. If that does not help, try once more; otherwise, use a process of elimination to identify and replace the faulty device (purchase, claim under warranty, or repair it). |
|
2 flashes 1-second pause 2 flashes |
Photocell activation |
The photocellsare being triggered, which is normal if their beam is interrupted while the gate is closing. If the beam was not interrupted, the photocells may be dirty, affected by glare, or faulty. |
|
3 flashes 1-second pause 3 flashes |
Motor force limiter activated
|
During movement, the gate detects increased friction — the gate may be incorrectly adjusted. Try moving it by hand and readjusting it. Otherwise, it usually helps to increase the motor force, or activate the Peak function. Another possible problem is if you have the bottom stop set too high. |
|
4 flashes 1-second pause 4 flashes |
STOP input activated
|
A command was sent to the STOP input, so if this was unexpected, check the devices connected to it. |
|
5 flashes 1-second pause 5 flashes |
Internal control unit error |
Wait 30 seconds and try again. If the problem persists, try to reset it.. Otherwise, the control unit will probably need to be repaired or replaced. |
|
6 flashes 1-second pause 6 flashes |
Hourly operating limit reached. |
Wait a few minutes for the cycle limiter to fall below the limit. |
|
7 flashes 1-second pause 7 flashes |
Internal electronic circuit error. |
Disconnect the entire drive for a few seconds and try again. If the problem persists, try to reset it.. Otherwise, the control unit will probably need to be repaired or replaced. |
|
8 flashes 1-second pause 8 flashes |
Continuous command active.
|
A command is being continuously sent to the drive. Check the devices connected to the OPEN input. If you have a timer connected, it is probably the cause.
