Description of NICE Walky WL1024C – gate operator with control unit for gates up to 1.8 m/180 kg

NICE WALKY WL1024C is a jointed operator for one leaf of a swing gate with an integrated WLA1 control unit. The motor runs on 24 V DC, the complete WL1024C is powered from 230 V AC. For a double-leaf gate, connect a second WL1024 motor without a control unit.

The operator is non-reversible and can be released with a key in the event of a power failure. The figures 1.8 m and 180 kg are separate maximum limits; whether a particular gate is suitable is determined by the combined length-and-weight chart.

Control unit and compatible accessories

The WLA1 is included with the WL1024C. A standalone WLA1 serves as a replacement control unit. The WL1024 is a second motor without a control unit; it does not need a second controller. The following procedures apply to the WLA1 with four LEDs L1–L4; before working on it, check the markings and controls on the installed board.

WhatWhyType
Second motorFor the second leaf; separate motor cable.
PhotocellsPassageway protection, polarity-free BlueBUS.
Warning lightSignals gate movement; FLASH connector and beacon function.
Radio receiver and remote controlPlug-in SM receiver and compatible coding; selection and pairing.
Backup batteryGate operation during a power failure; dedicated connector.
Solar power supplyFor locations without mains power; do not connect to the mains power supply.

Kits for one or two leaves

A standalone WL1024C operates one leaf. For a double-leaf gate, it also controls a second motor NICE WL1024 without its own control unit. Choose the number of motors and accessories to suit the specific kit. Two motors do not increase the limit for a single leaf.

When to choose the WALKY WL1024C

Suitable for lighter swing gates with enough clearance for the articulated arm. The leaf must move smoothly and remain stationary when released. The operator will not fix damaged hinges, friction, or wind acting on a solid infill.

RequirementSingle-leaf limit
Full-length armMaximum length 1.8 m at a maximum weight of 100 kg; opening up to 110°, depending on the geometry.
Maximum weight180 kg at a length of 0.8 m with the full-length arm. Longer leaves must meet the limits shown in the combined graph.
Shortened armMaximum length 1.6 m at a maximum weight of 100 kg; maximum opening 90°.
Leaf heightMaximum 2 m with both the full-length and shortened arm.
OperationMaximum 100 complete cycles per day; the control unit limits operation to approximately 50 cycles per hour. Continuous operation for approximately 10 minutes, followed by a required pause.

WALKY operating graph: leaf length in m on the horizontal axis and weight in kg on the vertical axis; shaded areas show the limits for the full-length and shortened arms
WALKY operating graph: leaf length in m on the horizontal axis and weight in kg on the vertical axis; shaded areas show the limits for the full-length and shortened arms

The intersection of the weight and length values must fall within the relevant shaded area. Infill area, wind exposure, hinge dimensions, and installation dimensions must also be taken into account. If you need help verifying your choice, contact us with the gate dimensions, weight, and photos.

Estimated service life

The load index is determined from the combined length and weight range, then adjusted for environmental factors. The graph gives an estimated number of cycles, not a guarantee or a number of years.

Characteristics of the complete automation systemIndexService-life graph

Weight under 80 kg: 40% / 50%.
Length over 1.6 mWeight over 60 kg: 55%.
Weight under 60 kg: 40%.
The shortened arm must not be used.
Temperature / humidityAbove 40 °C or below 0 °C, or humidity above 80%: +15% / +15%.
Solid, non-ventilated infill+15% / +10%.
Wind-exposed location+15% / +10%.

If the weight is exactly on the boundary between ranges, use the higher of the two adjacent indices when assessing the safety margin. The service-life index does not replace the operator suitability graph.

Installing the operator and articulated arm

Installation, mains wiring, and safety tests must be carried out by a qualified technician. Disconnect the mains supply and battery before carrying out any work. Both the open and closed positions require secure mechanical stops; these are not automatically included with the operator.

Arm clearance and dimensions A / B / E

DimensionRequirement
Post widthAt least 80 mm. For widths of 80–135 mm, install the rear bracket rotated 90° as shown. This refers to the width of the mounting surface, not a universal post cross-section.
Clearance E80–299 mm: the arm must be shortened; maximum opening 90°.
From 300 mm: use the full-length arm; opening up to 110°, depending on the geometry.
A and B with the full-length armMeasure the hinge and bracket positions according to the drawing. Point A/B must lie within the shaded area of the graph for the required angle.
PositioningMount the motor vertically, with the arm at the top of the gate leaf. Do not install the operator upside down with the arm pointing downwards.

Mounting the brackets and full-length arm

  1. Assemble the arm and rear bracket according to the drawing. The bent section of the arm faces the gate; the pins and retaining rings must be correctly seated.
  2. Mark the motor position according to dimensions A/B. Anchor the rear bracket to a load-bearing substrate; the installer must assess the anchor type and structural strength.
  3. Install the motor vertically. With the motor released and the gate closed, determine the position of the front bracket on the leaf; follow the vertical layout, including the 75 mm reference dimension, as shown in the drawing.
  4. Fasten the front bracket to the solid frame of the gate leaf. Initially, allow for adjustment of its position. Manually check the entire travel path, ensure the arm moves freely, and check contact with both stops.
  5. After adjusting the closed leaf, permanently secure the bracket with all three screws. Secure the arm with the pin and retaining ring.

Installation with the shortened arm

Shortening the arm is an installation modification required when clearance E is under 300 mm. First, check the limits for the shortened arm and the geometry. Dimension C is the distance between the axes of the arm pins; it is determined by the A/B intersection on the graph. Do not cut the shortened section by guesswork.

  1. Use dimensions A/B to select C from the graph; the maximum opening is 90°.
  2. Assemble the arm in the check position before cutting. With the gate both closed and open, use a string as shown in illustration AA/BB to check the bracket position and hinge axis.
  3. Only after confirming the full travel path should you adjust the length according to the drawing, remove any sharp edges, and complete the fastening.
  4. Recheck the stops and free movement, and make sure the arm does not collide with the post or gate leaf.

Second WL1024 motor

Motor without control unit NICE WL1024 connect to the designated three-pole motor terminal block. The two outer conductors are motor wires; the middle terminal, marked with the earth symbol, is PE, not minus. The polarity at the motor output changes with the direction of travel; it is not a power source for accessories. The integrated motor connects via its own connector, which has only one correct orientation. Before teaching, set JA/JB according to the complete gate assembly.

BlueBUS photocells and addresses

NICE EPMB connect in parallel to BlueBUS using two non-polarized wires. The TX and RX units in each pair must have the same jumpers; each pair must have a different address. After each change, repeat device learning. Relay photocells must not be connected directly to BlueBUS.

AddressFunction on WALKY

FOTO 2 / FOTO 2 IIPairs active during opening; stop and reverse movement.
FA1 / FA2Open command; not a substitute for a safety pair. On both the supported TX and RX units, remove jumper A.
BlueBUS capacityMaximum 15 units: up to 6 safety pairs, 2 pairs with an opening function and 4 supported command devices.

Set the exact jumper positions according to the EPMB photocell manual for the selected address. Choose the pair positions based on the area to be protected; after learning, check each pair’s response during actual opening and closing.

WALKY: positions of the FOTO, FOTO II, FOTO 1, FOTO 1 II, FOTO 2 and FOTO 2 II pairs
WALKY: positions of the FOTO, FOTO II, FOTO 1, FOTO 1 II, FOTO 2 and FOTO 2 II pairs

The FOTO 3 address is not permitted on the WLA1. Do not transfer the addressing from another operator.

STOP safety input

NO contacts are wired in parallel; NC contacts are wired in series. Two supported 8.2 kΩ resistive devices can be connected in parallel; for more than two, use the specified cascade wiring with a single end-of-line resistor. The installer must design mixed NO/NC/resistive wiring according to the instructions. The control unit stores the idle state during learning; after any change, it must be learned again and tested. Do not use a resistor to disable the required gate protection.

WLT warning light and ELS output

NICE WLT can be mounted on top of the WL1024C and connected to the designated connector Power module FLASH. While moving, it should flash in beacon mode: 0.5 s on / 0.5 s off. WLT also has courtesy-light and dusk-light functions; select the required function according to its instructions.

If WLT is installed separately, away from the operator, connect it to ELS, whose function must be changed via Oview. The factory-set ELS output is for a lock, not a beacon. Do not reverse the WLT connector or determine polarity based on P.P./STOP.

Selected functionOutput electrical limits
Electric lock12 V AC / maximum 15 VA, non-polarised.
BeaconWLT or 12 V DC lamp / maximum 21 W.
Other lamp or relayFor 24 V DC mains, −30% / +30%, max. 4 W; with PS424, 12 V DC −10% / +25%, max. 4 W. Check the settings and compatibility before connecting.

PS424 backup battery

NICE PS424 is not automatically included with the motor. Connect it to the designated connector only after installation, learning and testing are complete. During a power outage, the voltage of the auxiliary output drops. The number of operating cycles depends on the gate, power consumption and battery condition.

WALKY: plug-in SM receiver and installation of the PS424 backup battery

Solemyo and service interface

NICE Solemyo uses the same designated connector as the backup power supply. Mains power must not be connected at the same time as Solemyo. Configure power consumption reduction and the solar setup according to the system. Oview connects to BusT4 and provides additional settings and diagnostics. The L4 BlueBUS Stand-by setting is not the same as the Stand-by All function via Oview.

Initial startup and learning

Keep people out of the gate area. After power-up, BlueBUS should flash once per second, the TX/RX photocells should indicate operation, and the beacon should be off at rest. If the status is incorrect, disconnect the power and check the wiring. Learning is not a safety test.

1. Learning BlueBUS and STOP

  1. Press and hold OPEN + STOP/SET for approximately 3 s.
  2. Release when L1 and L2 start flashing rapidly.
  3. Wait for the process to finish. The STOP LED should be lit and L1/L2 should be off; L3/L4 may start flashing to prompt you to learn the positions.

Carry out learning even when no accessories are connected. Repeat it every time a device is added or removed.

2. JA / JB according to the configuration and leaf sequence

Before learning, select the exact configuration shown in the diagram: the position of the motor with the control unit, one or two leaves, and any overlap between the leaves. The black block indicates the control unit; the arrow indicates the overlapping leaf. Set the JA/JB jumpers exactly as shown in the corresponding row; do not select a position based solely on the label “left-hand motor” without checking the diagram orientation.

WALKY: eight gate configurations and the corresponding JA and JB jumper positions

3. Learning the mechanical stops

  1. Check that there are solid stops at both the open and closed positions. Disengage the motors, move the leaves to approximately halfway along their travel, then re-engage them.
  2. Press and hold STOP/SET + CLOSE for approximately 3 s; release when L3/L4 start flashing rapidly.
  3. Watch for this sequence: M1 closes slowly, M2 closes slowly, M2 and M1 open slowly, then both close fully at high speed. With a single motor, the corresponding single-leaf sequence is performed.
  4. If the first movement is not towards closing, or M1 does not start closing first, stop the process by pressing any button. With the power disconnected, check JA/JB and, if necessary, the polarity of the WL1024 motor wires.
  5. When the process completes successfully, L3/L4 turn off. If a photocell, command or other device is triggered, learning is interrupted and must be repeated from the beginning.

Then carry out several complete opening and closing cycles. Check starting, normal speed, deceleration, stopping at the stops, and safety tests.

WLA1 programming – four LEDs, L1 to L4

OPEN opens, CLOSE closes and STOP/SET stops the gate; during setup, OPEN/CLOSE select the LEDs. Changing the force or speed requires the movement and impact forces to be checked again. Do not compensate for faulty hinges by increasing the force.

Level I – ON / OFF functions

  1. Press and hold STOP/SET for approximately 3 s, then release when L1 flashes.
  2. Use OPEN/CLOSE to select the function LED.
  3. Briefly press SET. A short flash indicates OFF; a long flash indicates ON.
  4. After 10 s without a button press, the mode exits and the changes are saved.

In condominium mode II/L2 → L4, P.P. and Open are ignored while opening; Close reverses movement. While closing, P.P. and Open reverse movement and start opening; Close is ignored. Do not confuse the parameter input LED with the LED for the selected value.

Receiver and remote controls

The radio receiver is fitted in the SM socket SM with both mains power and the battery disconnected. Before pairing, check the type of receiver installed and the remote control’s coding. The equipment supplied with a standalone motor may differ from that supplied with a ready-to-install kit.

For NICE OXIBD select a compatible remote control, for example NICE MYGO4. An existing SMXI or OXI may use different coding. The matching frequency of 433.92 MHz is not enough.

ModeCommands
Mode 1Outputs: 1 – step-by-step; 2 – partial opening 1; 3 – open; 4 – close.
Mode 2One button is stored for the selected supported command. Advanced commands require a compatible receiver.

Pairing, deleting a button and clearing the radio memory should be carried out according to the instructions for the installed OXIBD receiver. Resetting the WLA1 does not replace the plug-in receiver’s radio memory. Connect the OXIBD antenna according to its antenna connector.

Troubleshooting – what to check in the event of a fault

The warning light repeats a short series of flashes, with a 1 s pause between series. Count the flashes in one series before looking for the cause. Do not disable a safety device by bridging it.

FlashesCause and solution
1BlueBUS does not match the learned configuration. Check the cables, devices and addresses; after making a change, repeat the learning procedure.
2The photocell is blocking movement: remove the obstruction, clean and align the optics.
3Increased resistance or force limit activated: check the hinges, arm and clear travel path; test the forces.
4STOP status changed: check the safety device and wiring.
5Internal parameter error: wait at least 30 s and try a command; if the error persists, disconnect the power and contact a qualified service technician.
6Movement limit exceeded: wait a few minutes for the operating limit to reset.
7Electrical fault: wait at least 30 s; if the fault persists, a qualified technician should disconnect all power sources and check the control board and cables.
8A continuous command is blocking another command: check for a stuck switch or P.P. timer contact.
9The automation system is electronically locked: it requires an unlock command; this is not the same as manual key release.

LED status at restMeaning
BlueBUS flashes once per secondNormal operation; 2 quick flashes confirm an input status change or a received command.
BlueBUS off / continuously litCheck the power supply, fuse and control unit; the indicator behaves differently in standby.
STOP LED onThe learned safety input is in its normal state.
STOP LED offCheck the safety input; its status does not match the learned configuration.
L1 + L2 flashing slowlyThe devices must be learned.
L3 + L4 flashing slowlyThe limit positions must be learned.

Emergency movement using hold-to-run control

If a safety device fails, give priority to manual release. Under supervision, an installer can use hold-to-run mode: send a command, repeat it within 3 s and keep it held; after approximately 2 s, the gate will move only while the command is held. The area must be clear and the entire gate must be visible. This does not replace repair of the safety device.

Manual release in the event of a power failure

Release the gate only when it is stationary. If there is a mechanical fault, unsafe movement or strong wind, secure the gate leaf safely first.

  1. Lift the release cover and insert the key.
  2. Turn the key almost one full revolution clockwise. You can move the gate leaf by hand.
  3. To re-engage the mechanism, turn the key anticlockwise and gently move the gate leaf until the mechanism engages.
  4. Remove the key. Turn the release disk 90° counterclockwise to cover the opening, then close the cover.

WALKY: A – release with the key; B – re-engage the drive
WALKY: A – release with the key; B – re-engage the drive

Clearing the WLA1 memory

A reset restores the factory settings and erases the unit's learned data. With the gate stationary, press and hold OPEN + CLOSE, until L1 and L2 start flashing. Then repeat device learning, mechanical stop learning, and the safety tests. The plug-in radio receiver's memory is erased using a separate receiver procedure.

Tests before handing over the gate

  1. With the drive released, check the entire gate leaf: it must move smoothly by hand with a force of less than 390 N and remain stationary when released. This test does not measure motor torque or permissible impact force.
  2. Check the anchors, brackets, screws, pins, retaining clips, and both mechanical stops. Engage the motors.
  3. Test opening, closing, and STOP from all control devices, including the leaf sequence and overlap.
  4. Test each photocell and safety edge individually in both directions of travel; verify the gate's actual response.
  5. The installer must measure impact forces using a force gauge. Repeat the test after changing the force, speed, or geometry.
  6. After successful testing, hand over the gate with its safety labels, release instructions, and maintenance schedule. Do not walk between moving gate leaves.

Maintenance and safe use

Carry out an inspection at least every 6 months or 20,000 manoeuvres, whichever comes first. Disconnect the mains and the PS424 or Solemyo before carrying out any work. Check for corrosion, secure fixings, joint play, pins, stops, cables, and the release mechanism. Clean and test the photocells; repeat the safety tests after maintenance.

Do not try to fix motor problems by increasing the force. If a fault occurs, stop using automatic operation and call for service. Dispose of the motor, electronics, and battery at an appropriate collection point, not in household waste.
