Description of NICE ROX 1000 - standalone operator for sliding gates (A)
Available replacement!
NICE Rox ROX1000 has been replaced by a newer model NICE ROBO1000.
NICE ROX1000 is a standalone electromechanical operator for a sliding gate with a 230 V AC motor, an integrated control unit ROA40R10 and a radio receiver. The gate is stopped by mechanical limit switches activated by cams on the rack. It is non-reversible; in the event of a power failure, it can be released with a key.
Which sliding gate is the ROX1000 suitable for?
For a gate weighing up to 1,000 kg and measuring 8 m provided installation and operating conditions are met. For typical applications, a maximum gate length of 5 mis recommended; for longer gates, resistance, duty cycle and inertia must be assessed separately. Weight alone does not guarantee suitability.
The gate must move smoothly by hand, without sticking or moving on its own. The force required to start and move it must not exceed 25% of the available force of the specific motor version. The operator does not replace repairs to the wheels, guide or misaligned rack.
| Gate length | Maximum cycles/hour | Maximum consecutive cycles |
|---|---|---|
| Up to 4 m | 40 | 20 |
| Over 4 m up to 6 m | 25 | 13 |
| Over 6 m up to 8 m | 20 | 10 |
The table applies to the 230 V ROX1000 under the conditions specified in the motor manual. The rated value is 20 cycles/hour, with a maximum continuous operating time of 4 minutes. One cycle means one opening and one closing; higher resistance or temperature may reduce the permitted operating time.
ROA40R10 and differences from older control boards
The following procedures are for the ROA40R10 with a PROGRAM button, an IBT4N connector and 10 DIP switches. The older ROA39 has different functions. Check the control board identification under the cover before adjusting settings.
The ROA40R10 has manual force and operating-time settings, automatic closing, optional soft start/slowdown and partial opening for pedestrians. The main movement speed cannot be adjusted continuously. Commands can be connected via the SbS volt-free contact; for professional configuration, use IBT4N with OVIEW.
What the standalone operator includes
One ROX1000 operator with integrated electronics and receiver, a base plate, anchors and fasteners as shown, release keys and limit-switch cams. The remote control, photocells, warning light and toothed rack are available separately or as part of a kit.
ROX1000 kits
| Kit | Equipment |
|---|---|
| Kit B | Operator and FLO2R-S remote control |
| Kit C | Also includes EPM photocells |
| Kit D | Also includes EPM photocells and an ELAC warning light |
| Kit E | EPM photocells and 4 × LZ-1-1 rack sections |
| Kit F | EPM photocells, ELAC warning light and 4 × LZ-1-1 rack sections |
Each kit listed includes one motor and one FLO2R-S. Choose enough rack sections to cover the entire gate travel, including the overhang; the four sections in the kit may not be sufficient for every gate.
Installing the operator and toothed rack
Installation, electrical connections and testing must be carried out by a qualified technician. Disconnect the mains before starting work. The foundation must be firm and level, and not in an area prone to flooding. The gate must have solid end stops at both ends, a guide and protection against derailment or lifting.
- Prepare the foundation, cable conduits and positioning to suit the rack. The motor and base plate must be parallel to the gate leaf.
- Secure the two anchors to the plate with a nut above and below each one. Leave the upper threaded section protruding 25–35 mm as shown.
- Set the plate level in the concrete. Allow the concrete to cure fully before installing the motor.
- Fit the motor and washers, then tighten the nuts lightly for now. Adjust the height using the adjustment screws.
- Release the motor. Fit the rack in sections while moving the gate by hand, keeping it in a straight line.
- Throughout the entire travel, leave a gap between the rack and pinion of 1–2 mm. The gate must not rest its weight on the motor. Only after manually checking all sections, fully tighten the nuts and fit the caps.
Right- or left-hand installation
The drive is factory-configured for right-hand installation, as shown in the diagram. For left-hand installation, with the power disconnected, a technician turns the motor connector and limit switch connector by 180° as shown in the picture. This does not involve swapping the PE protective conductor or the mains supply.
Setting the limit switches
- With the power disconnected and the motor disengaged, open the gate manually so that it remains 2–3 cm from the fixed mechanical stop.
- Slide the opening limit switch plate along the rack until the limit switch trips and you hear a click.
- From this point, move it at least 2 cm further in the same direction and secure it with screws.
- Repeat the same procedure on the closing side.
- After testing the motor, verify that the gate stops safely, taking its inertia into account. The limit switch does not replace the fixed stop.
Manual opening during a power outage
- Stop the gate, switch off the power and hold it to prevent it from moving by itself.
- Slide the lock cover aside, insert the key and turn it as shown in the picture. Pull out the release handle.
- Move the gate manually. Make sure the gate has full clearance throughout its travel and that the gate leaf is stable.
- To restore operation, push in the handle, lock it, remove the key and close the cover. Check that the drive is re-engaged before issuing an automatic command.
Types of electrical cables
| Circuit | Cable type | Maximum length |
|---|---|---|
| A – power supply | 3 × 1.5 mm² | 30 m |
| B – warning light | 2 × 1.5 mm² | 10 m |
| C – antenna | RG58 coaxial cable | 10 m, less than 5 m recommended |
| D – TX / RX photocells | 2 × 0.25 / 4 × 0.25 mm² | 30 m |
| E/F – key switch | 2 cables, 2 × 0.5 mm² each, or one 4 × 0.5 mm² cable | 20 m |
For a mains supply cable longer than 30 m, use a larger cross-section, for example 3 × 2.5 mm², and provide protective earthing for the automation system as instructed. The drive is Class I and requires a PE connection. Keep power and signal cables separate, and secure the cables to prevent them from being pulled out or water from getting in.
Lowercase letters indicate the devices: a, motor; b, photocells; c, their posts; d, key switch or keypad; e, warning light; and f, rack.
ROA40R10 wiring and polarity
| 8 / 9 – accessories | 8 = − (0 V), 9 = +24 V DC, tolerance ±10%, total current draw no more than 100 mA. |
|---|---|
| 9 / 10 – STOP | Teach-in input, NO, NC or 8.2 kΩ; see below for details. |
| 9 / 11 – PHOTO | Voltage-free NC photocell contact. If the beam is interrupted during closing, the gate reverses direction. |
| 8 / 12 – Phototest | 8 = minus, 12 = switched positive for TX, maximum 100 mA. RX remains connected to 8−/9+. |
| 9 / 13 – SbS | Voltage-free NO step-by-step command. Do not apply an external voltage to the input. |
| 4 / 5 – FLASH | 230 V AC, warning light with integrated flashing function, maximum 60 W; for example, NICE ELAC. AC has no plus/minus polarity. ELDC is not suitable for this output. |
| 1 / 2 – antenna | Coaxial input for the integrated receiver. Connect the centre conductor and shield as shown in the diagram; this is not a +/− power supply. |
Leave approximately 20–30 cm of spare wire under the cover and secure the wires properly. After completing the tests, fit the cover and tighten the screw. The motor and capacitor outputs are not accessory power supplies.
EPM photocells and Phototest
ROX uses conventional relay photocells, for example, NICE EPM. Two-wire EPMB photocells cannot be connected directly to it as BlueBUS devices. For EPM photocells, the power terminals on both TX and RX are 1 positive / 2 negative. Connect the RX output contact 4 COM → 9 and 5 NC → 11 on the control board.
Without the Phototest function
power both TX and RX from 9+ and 8−. Connect the receiver's NC contact between 9 and 11.
With the Phototest function
RX remains connected to 9+ / 8−, TX is powered from the switched output 12+ / 8−. Before movement, the control unit checks the photocells; if the test fails, the gate will not move. For EPM devices powered by this DC voltage, leave the SYNC jumper in its original position; EPM synchronisation mode is intended for AC power. After making the changes, perform device learning.
During testing, interrupt the beam near the transmitter, near the receiver and midway between them. The technician checks the response during closing and, if DIP6 is enabled, during opening as well.
STOP input and adding devices
During learning, STOP at terminals 9/10 detects NO, NC or an 8.2 kΩ resistor. A change from the learned state triggers a stop and brief reversal. Repeat the learning procedure after adding or removing a STOP device or changing the PHOTO wiring.
- Multiple NO contacts are connected in parallel.
- Multiple NC contacts are connected in series.
- Resistive safety edges are connected as specified in their instructions, with a total end-of-line resistance of 8.2 kΩ.
- When combining NO and NC, the parallel NC branch is routed through an 8.2 kΩ resistor. A technician must design this combination according to the safety function.
For a Category III safety function, the manufacturer requires this wiring to use devices with a constant resistance of 8.2 kΩ. A jumper or contact alone is no substitute for assessing the complete assembly. Phototest enables enhanced photocell monitoring with the appropriate wiring; safety must be retested after every intervention.
Initial start-up and device learning
- With the power off, check the mains/PE, right- or left-hand installation, limit switch cams, STOP and photocells.
- Move the gate manually to approximately the midpoint of its travel and engage the drive. Clear the passage and switch on the power.
- In normal standby, the OK LED should flash green once per second. PHOTO and STOP should be lit; FCA/FCC are lit when the limit switches are not actuated, and the corresponding LED goes out when a limit switch is actuated.
- Hold down PROGRAM. After about 3 seconds, OK starts flashing rapidly; keep holding the button.
- Wait until STOP is lit and OK is steady green. Release PROGRAM within 10 seconds. Three green flashes confirm success; five red flashes indicate that learning failed.
- Send a brief command and check that the direction and limit switch operation are correct. If an error occurs, stop movement and disconnect the power before making repairs.
- Set TL/TP/F and the required functions. Repeat learning after changing DIP1/2 or the STOP/PHOTO wiring, then carry out the full tests.
Device learning detects the safety inputs. Set the travel path using the limit switch cams and the TL operating time.
TL, TP and F settings and DIP switches
| TL – operating time | Set it to cover the full movement, with a reserve of approximately 2–3 seconds. When slow-down is enabled, set the time so that slow-down begins about 50–70 cm before the limit switch. |
|---|---|
| TP – pause | Sets the waiting time before automatic closing in automatic mode. |
| F – force | Sets the motor power. A technician should adjust it while measuring forces and testing the safety devices—not use it to compensate for a gate that is binding. |
The factory default is semi-automatic mode: DIP1 ON, DIP2–10 OFF. Change the switches with the power disconnected.
| DIP1 | DIP2 | Mode |
|---|---|---|
| OFF | OFF | Hold-to-run – movement only while a command is held |
| ON | OFF | Semi-automatic |
| OFF | ON | Automatic with TP pause |
| ON | ON | Automatic + always close; after power is restored, the gate closes after 5 seconds |
| DIP | Function when ON |
|---|---|
| 3 | Condominium mode: commands issued while opening do not interrupt movement; this does not apply to hold-to-run operation. |
| 4 | 5-second pre-flashing; 2 seconds in hold-to-run mode. |
| 5 | Close after photocell beam is cleared: in automatic mode, the pause is reduced to 5 seconds; in semi-automatic mode, an intervention during closing may trigger closing after TP. |
| 6 | Photocells are active during opening as well. |
| 7 | Soft start. |
| 8 | Slow-down at the end of travel; this also reduces the available torque and requires the TL to be set correctly. |
| DIP9 | DIP10 | Braking |
|---|---|---|
| OFF | OFF | Disabled |
| OFF | ON | Low |
| ON | OFF | Medium |
| ON | ON | High |
When DIP8 is ON, the slow-down speed drops to 30% of the rated value and the motor torque drops by approximately 70%. If the gate requires high torque, it may stop during this phase; a technician must verify that it reliably reaches the limit switch.
After changing DIP1/2, perform device learning. Work on the TLM jumper and advanced service settings must be carried out by a technician in accordance with the installation manual.
Integrated receiver and remote control pairing
The 433.92 MHz receiver supports FLO, FLOR, O-CODE and HCS SMILO. The first remote control stored determines the code family; all others must be compatible with it. Different families cannot be combined just because they use the same frequency.
Examples of compatible models include FLO2R-S, FLO4R-S, FLO2, FLO4 and SMILO SM2. FLO uses a fixed code, while FLOR and SMILO use a rolling code. When replacing an old RO500, first check which family the existing remote controls belong to.
Mode 1 – storing the entire remote control
- On the control board, hold down the button RADIO for approximately 4 seconds, until the radio LED lights up, then release it.
- Within 10 seconds, press and hold any button on the remote control being programmed for approximately 3 seconds. Three LED flashes confirm that it has been programmed.
- Another remote control from the same family can be programmed during the next 10-second interval; otherwise, wait for the process to finish.
On the ROA40R10, the buttons are assigned as follows in Mode 1: 1 step-by-step, 2 partial opening, 3 opening, 4 closing. A one- or two-button remote control has only the corresponding first commands.
Mode 2 – individual button
Press RADIO briefly to select a command: 1× step-by-step, 2× partial opening, 3× opening, 4× closing, 5× STOP. The number of flashes must match the selection. Within 10 seconds, press and hold the desired remote-control button for approximately 3 seconds; three flashes confirm that it has been programmed.
One quick flash indicates that the code is already programmed, six flashes indicate an incompatible family, and eight indicate that the memory is full. The receiver can store up to 100 remote controls in Mode 1. Further procedures are described in the NICE remote-control pairing guide.
Deleting radio remote controls
With the radio memory unlocked, press and hold RADIO: the LED lights up, goes out, and then flashes three times. Release it during the third flash. Five flashes confirm that all remote controls have been deleted. This does not reset the drive settings. If the memory is locked, follow the unlocking procedure in the installation manual.
Accessories and replacement of an older ROBO
When replacing a NICE ROBO RO500 existing accessories can often be retained, but a technician must check the voltage, current draw, contact type, and coding.
| Photocells | EPM or a suitable NC relay pair. When using a 24 V DC supply, observe the polarity and current limit. |
|---|---|
| Flashing light | ELAC to the 230 V AC FLASH output. An old 12/24 V flashing light cannot be connected directly to this output. |
| Key switch / external module | Voltage-free NO contact on terminals 9/13. The external module's power supply must meet its requirements and the 100 mA limit. |
| Rack | Module 4, correct length, and 1–2 mm clearance. Also check the wear and height of the existing rack. |
| Service | IBT4N with OVIEW. Disconnect the power supply before connecting. |
For smart-system integration, verify the specific module and the commands required. The ROX receiver does not have a connector for a plug-in OXIBD; functions from newer BlueBUS drives cannot automatically be transferred to it.
ROA40R10 diagnostics
| OK LED | Meaning and action |
|---|---|
| Off | Check the power supply and fuses; eliminate any short circuit before replacing a fuse. |
| Green, once per second | Normal standby. Two quick green flashes indicate an input change. |
| 1 red flash | Learning failed or DIP1/2 changed: check the inputs and repeat the learning procedure. |
| 2 red flashes | PHOTO is preventing movement; remove the obstruction and check the photocells. |
| 4 red flashes | STOP activated; check the safety device. |
| 5 red flashes | Internal parameter error. Wait at least 30 seconds; if the fault persists, contact service and restore the settings. |
| 7 red flashes | Internal circuit error or mode change. Disconnect the power supply, check the condition and settings; if the problem recurs, contact service. |
| 8 red flashes | A command is active that prevents other movement; check the remote control or contact. |
For PHOTO and STOP, an illuminated LED indicates that the input is ready; an unlit LED indicates activation or a fault. SbS is lit while a command is active. FCA/FCC go out when the corresponding limit switch is activated. A steady red or green OK LED outside the learning procedure requires a fault check.
Restoring the settings
A technician should reset the system only after identifying the cause of the fault. With the motor stopped, switch off the power, press and hold PROGRAM, then switch the power back on. After OK lights up and goes out, there are three flashes; release PROGRAM during the third flash. Five flashes confirm that the settings have been restored.
This procedure does not delete the remote controls, but it unlocks the radio memory. Before using the system again, reset the functions, teach the devices, and carry out tests. Use the separate RADIO button to delete remote controls.
Testing, use, and maintenance
Before handover, the technician repeatedly checks the full movement, limit and fixed stops, manual release, photocells/Phototest, and STOP, and measures impact forces. Check that the gate does not move dangerously after a power failure or a change of mode.
Carry out maintenance at least every 6 months or 20,000 operations, whichever comes first. Check the anchors, rack and its clearance, wheels, guides, corrosion, cables, manual release, and all safety devices. Disconnect the mains before working.
Keep out of the gate opening while it is moving, and do not let children play with the gate or remote controls. If the gate leaf has a pedestrian access door, opening it must prevent the motor from starting. If you notice unusual noise or a fault, stop the automatic operation, safely release the gate, and contact service. Do not bypass the safety inputs. If the gate is the only access, plan access to the manual release during installation.
