Simplified procedure for wiring and commissioning the NICE Robus RBS gate operator

If you don’t feel like reading the entire manual for Robus RBS operators, you can get it up and running in just a few minutes using this simplified wiring and startup procedure.

We assume your sliding gate moves freely along its track and that you have already installed the rack, mounted the operator, and fitted the end stops to the rack.

In other words, when the operator is disengaged, you can move the gate by hand, and the operator’s limit switch activates in both the fully closed and fully open positions.

The easiest way is to get the operator itself running first, without any accessories, which you can connect later one by one. But you can connect the accessories right away if you like—it doesn’t matter when you do it; anything can be connected or disconnected at any time. You can always return the operator to factory settings.

Step 0. Wiring

This is probably a good time to plug in the radio receiver. You can plug it in later, too, but in principle, you should only insert or remove it when the power is disconnected.

Power supply cable
Terminal L – live wire from the power supply cable
Terminal N – neutral wire from the power supply cable
Terminal marked with the ground symbol – ground wire from the power supply cable

Warning light
Connect the two-core cable from the warning light’s bulb-symbol terminal to the FLASH terminal on the control unit. If you are not installing a warning light, leave the FLASH terminal unused.

Antenna
If your control unit has a radio receiver with an antenna terminal, connect the antenna to the receiver. If it doesn’t, connect the antenna to the control unit. If you don’t have an antenna, connect the small wire supplied with the receiver to its first terminal (a temporary antenna).

Photocells
Run a two-core cable from the BUS (BlueBUS) terminal on the control unit to each photocell, or connect the control unit to the first photocell and then run a cable from there to the second. Polarity does not matter. Do not break any circuits on the circuit board. More about connecting photocells.

Key switch
Connect terminals NC and C on the first microswitch in the key switch to the STOP input on the control unit.
Connect terminals NO and C on the second microswitch in the key switch to the SbS (or P.P.) input on the control unit.
More about connecting a key switch.

Step 1. How to get the operator running:

  1. Disconnect the operator from the power supply. The easiest way is to remove the power fuse.
  2. Move the gate by hand to roughly halfway along its travel (so it is neither open nor closed), engage the operator, then move the gate slightly so the gearbox engages.
  3. Set the gate opening direction selector switch on the control unit. If you are standing inside the property, looking at the gate from the inside:
    • if the operator is on the left (the gate opens to the left), set the switch to the left as well;
    • if the operator is on the right (the gate opens to the right), set the switch to the right.
  4. Restore power to the operator.
  5. With the factory settings (or after a reset), the BlueBUS and L1+L2 LEDs on the control unit should be flashing. The AUX IN indicator at the top right should also be lit, if present.
  6. Run the connected-device setup: press and hold the OPEN+STOP/SET buttons together (the first and second buttons) until the L1+L2 LEDs start flashing faster (approx. When the L1+L2 LEDs start flashing faster (approx. 3–4 seconds), release the buttons. The L1+L2 LEDs will continue flashing briefly, then the operator will hum and click, and L3+L4 will start flashing.
  7. Run the gate travel learning procedure: press and hold the STOP/SET+CLOSE buttons together. When L3+L4 start flashing faster and the gate begins to move, release the buttons. The operator will open the gate and then close it, leaving it in the closed position. L3+L4 will turn off.
  8. You should now be able to open and close the gate by pressing the OPEN, STOP/SET, and CLOSE buttons. The OPEN button opens the gate, the CLOSE button closes it, and the STOP/SET button stops it.
  9. Congratulations—you’ve got your NICE Robus RBS sliding gate operator up and running!

If you haven’t already, you can connect the photocells, warning light, key switch, or other accessories, plug in the receiver, and pair the remote controls.
