Wiring a key switch to NICE Robus and Run sliding gate operators

The key switch has two positions. You can turn the key either to the right or to the left. A spring inside the switch returns the key to the center. The switch contains two microswitches, each with three terminals: NC, C and NO. You can connect just one side of the key switch, connect both sides, or leave it unconnected altogether. It does not affect the operator’s operation; it is an optional accessory. You can connect each side of the key switch to either the STOP, SbS (Step by Step, step-by-step operation; formerly P.P., Italian for passo-passo, or “step by step”), OPEN or CLOSE terminal.

Possible wiring configurations and functions:

  • STOP input Connect it to the NC and C terminals of a microswitch in the key switch. Turning the key in this direction only stops the gate.
  • SbS (P.P.) input Connect it to the NO and C terminals of a microswitch. Repeatedly turning the key in this direction makes the gate move up and down and stop, depending on how the operator is programmed. The factory setting is as follows: when the gate is closed, the first turn of the key starts opening it; the next turn stops it; the following turn starts closing it; and the next turn does not stop it but immediately starts opening it again. If the gate is fully open, turning the key closes it. This works the same way as repeatedly pressing the remote control button.
  • OPEN input It is connected and works just like SbS, except that it only opens the gate, stops it, and opens it again. Once the gate is open, it stops responding.
  • CLOSE input This is the opposite of the OPEN input: it only closes the gate, stops it, and closes it again. The gate does not respond when it is closed. This input can be reprogrammed to partially open the gate (pedestrian access) using the programming settings.

Key switch wiring summary

The original manual shows wiring to the STOP and SbS terminals: connect the NC and C terminals of one microswitch to the STOP input on the control unit using a two-core cable, then connect the NO and C terminals of the other microswitch to the SbS input on the control unit. This means you can open, close and stop the gate by turning the key one way, and only stop it by turning it the other way. You can also wire the key switch in any way you like.

Remember to disconnect the operator from the power supply before making any wiring changes. After changing the wiring and restoring power, detect the connected devices by holding the OPEN+STOP/SET buttons until the L1+L2 LEDs start flashing, then release the buttons.
