Simplified procedure for wiring and commissioning NICE Rox gate operators
Applies to the control unit ROA40R10.
If you don’t feel like reading the entire manual for Rox operators, you can get your NICE Rox operator up and running in just a few minutes using this simplified wiring and setup procedure.
We’ll assume your sliding gate rolls smoothly and that you’ve completed the steps for installing the rack, installing the operator, and fitting the end stops to the rack.
In other words, when the operator is released, you can move the gate by hand, and the operator’s limit switch activates in both the open and closed positions.
The easiest approach is to get the operator running on its own, without any accessories, then connect those one by one later. But feel free to connect the accessories straight away—it doesn’t matter when you do it; anything can be connected or disconnected at any time. You can always restore the operator to its factory settings.
Step 0. Wiring
Power cable
Terminal L – live wire from the power cable
Terminal N – neutral wire from the power cable
Grounding – In the box next to the operator, there is a flat connector. Secure the ground wire from the power cable in it, then slide it onto the grounding terminal.
Flashing beacon
Connect the two-core cable from the beacon, from the terminal marked with a bulb symbol, to terminals 4–5 on the control unit. If you are not installing a beacon, leave terminals 7–8 unconnected.
Antenna
Connect the antenna’s coaxial cable to terminals 1 and 2 on the control unit (top left): connect the coaxial core to terminal 1, and twist the shielding between your fingers and connect it to terminal no. 2. If you don’t have an antenna, connect a short piece of wire to terminal 1 as a makeshift antenna. Or leave it disconnected—feel free to skip this step.
Photocells
If you don’t have photocells, bridge inputs 9 and 11 on the control unit. If you do have photocells, connect them as follows:
Connect terminal 1 from each photocell to terminal 9 on the control unit.
Connect terminal 2 from each photocell to terminal 8 on the control unit.
Connect terminal 4 of the RX photocell to terminal 9 on the control unit.
Connect terminal 5 of the RX photocell to terminal 11 on the control unit.
Do not break any circuits on the photocell circuit board. More about connecting photocells.
Step 1. Getting the operator running
- Disconnect the operator from the power supply.
- Set DIP switch 8 to the down position.
- If you are standing inside the property and the gate opens to the right (with the operator on the right-hand side), continue to the next step. If the gate opens to the left (with the operator on the left-hand side), unplug, rotate 180°, and reconnect:
- the three-pin limit-switch connector (the one with the red, blue, and black wires),
- and the three-pin motor connector (the one with the green, blue, and black wires).
- Manually move the gate to roughly the middle of its travel (neither fully open nor fully closed), engage the operator, then pull the gate leaf slightly so the gearbox engages.
- Reconnect the operator to the power supply.
- With the factory settings (or after a reset), the OK LED on the control unit should flash green once per second, and the LED by terminal 11 should be lit.
- Run the connected-device recognition procedure: Press and hold the PROG button. The OK LED will start flashing green more quickly. Keep holding PROG, and release it when the OK LED stays solid green. The OK LED will then flash green three times to confirm that the inputs have been recognized successfully. At the same time, the LED next to terminal no. 10.
If the OK LED starts flashing red, the photocells or the STOP input are wired incorrectly. - You should now be able to open, close, and stop the gate by repeatedly pressing the SbS button.
- Great, you’ve got the operator moving!
If everything works as it should, excellent—you can connect the photocells, beacon, key switch, or other accessories, and pair the remote controls. If something doesn’t seem right, you can fine-tune the motor further:
Step 2. Fine-tuning the motor and setting the functions
Setting the operating time:
The Rox operator works on the basis of an operating time. Turning the TL trimmer sets how long the motor runs. If you turn the TL trimmer fully counterclockwise, the motor will run for about 3 seconds. If you turn it fully clockwise, it will run for about 60 seconds. Set this trimmer so that the operating time is longer than the time the operator needs to move the gate from one end of its travel to the other.
Setting the force:
Turn the F trimmer clockwise to increase the motor force; turn it counterclockwise to reduce the force. The force should be set as a compromise: the gate should not push too hard if it encounters an obstacle, but the force must also be high enough for the gate to move reliably.
Setting automatic closing
Set DIP switch 1 down and DIP switch 2 up. Turn the TP trimmer to set the delay before the gate closes. If you turn the TP trimmer fully counterclockwise, the gate will close automatically after about 3 seconds. If you turn it fully clockwise, the gate will close after about 120 seconds.
Note: Every time you change a DIP switch setting, you must run the connected-device recognition procedure.
For the other functions, see the manual; they are generally not used.
Pairing a remote control with the NICE Rox operator
The receiver in the Rox is excellent: it can store all NICE remotes using unidirectional Nice coding—Flo fixed code, FloR rolling code (including O-Code), and Smilo. It’s not one or the other. It supports them all at the same time.
The only thing the receiver in the Rox does not support is two-way operation. So if you have an ON3EBD remote, switch it to unidirectional mode.
As with all NICE devices, here too it matters
- whether you want the remote control to operate only this operator,
- or other gates as well.
I want to use the remote to operate only this operator
All the buttons are stored in the operator at once. The first button will open, close, and stop the whole gate with repeated presses; the second will open it just one metre (pedestrian access); the third button (if available) will only open and stop it; and the fourth will only close and stop it. Procedure:
- On the Rox, press and hold the pairing button. Release it when the pairing LED lights up.
- The LED will stay lit for 10 seconds. During those 10 seconds, press and hold any button on the remote. Release it when the pairing LED starts flashing.
- The LED will light up again. Either press and hold another remote’s button, or wait for the LED to go out. That’s it.
I want to use the remote to operate other gates as well
In this case, pair just one button with the Rox:
- On the Rox, press the pairing button once without holding it down. The pairing LED will start flashing at one-second intervals.
- The LED will flash for 10 seconds. During those 10 seconds, press and hold the button on the remote that you want to use to operate the operator. Release it when the pairing LED flashes three times for a longer duration.
- The LED will start flashing again. Either press and hold the button on another remote, or wait for the LED to go out. That’s it.
Note: If needed, you can erase the receiver’s entire memory.
