Connecting photocells to the NICE Rox drive unit
Operators NICE Rox use conventional hard-wired technology, so they are generally compatible with all 24 V relay photocells. Rox operators are not compatible with photocells using BlueBus technology.
Photocells are always supplied in pairs: a transmitter (TX) and a receiver (RX). Photocells are divided into three types:
- Both photocells are wired (both the transmitter TX and receiver RX). The most commonly used models are BF, EPM and EPS, followed by EPL and F210; older models MOF, FE and FI are no longer available.
- One wired photocell and one battery-powered wireless photocell. FT210 model.
- Reflector photocell. The only model is EPMOR.
Also available:
Disconnect the operator from the power supply before wiring the photocells. If you are not connecting photocells, install a jumper between terminals 9 and 11 on the control unit.
Wiring wired photocells
Connect the TX photocell using a 2 × 0.5 mm²cable, and the RX photocell using a 4 × 0.5 mm2. In theory, instead of running a wire from terminal 4 on the RX photocell to terminal 9 on the control unit, you can install a jumper between terminals 1 and 4 on the photocell, allowing you to use a three-core cable.
Wire the photocells as follows:
- Connect terminal 1 of each photocell to terminal 9 on the control unit.
- Connect terminal 2 of each photocell to terminal 8 on the control unit.
- Connect terminal 4 of the RX photocell to terminal 9 on the control unit.
- Connect terminal 5 of the RX photocell to terminal 11 on the control unit.
Wiring one wired and one wireless photocell
This applies specifically to NICE FT210 photocells. One photocell is connected using a four-core cable; the other is battery-powered.
Connect NICE FT210 photocells to a NICE Rox operator as follows:
- Disconnect the operator from the power supply.
- Set the jumpers on the TX photocell as follows:
- Jumper J1 – remove it (if the photocells are more than 7 m apart, install it)
- Jumper J2 – remove it
- Jumper J3 – remove it
- Set the jumpers on the RX photocell as follows:
- Jumper J1 – remove it
- Jumper J2 – install it
- Connect the wires as follows (photocell terminals are numbered from top to bottom):
- From terminal no. 9 (+24 V) on the Rox operator to terminal no. on the RX photocell 10 (+24 V)
- From terminal no. 8 (-0 V) on the Rox operator to terminal no. on the RX photocell 9 (-0 V)
- From terminal no. 11 (PHOTO) on the Rox operator to terminal no. on the RX photocell 1 (PHOTO)
- From terminal no. 9 (+24 V) on the Rox operator to terminal no. on the RX photocell 2 (COM)
- Reconnect the operator to the power supply.
The LEDs on the RX photocell should be lit as follows (from left to right):
- LED 1 – green; it should be lit
- LED 2 – red; it should be off
- LED 3 – yellow; it should be off
- LED 4 – red; the slower it flashes, the better the visibility, or the diagnostic sequence
Wiring a reflector photocell
The only model is NICE EPMOR. The photocell, which contains both the TX transmitter and RX receiver, is installed on one side, with only a reflector on the opposite side of the passage. Wiring instructions:
- Disconnect the operator from the power supply.
- Refer to figure 2 on page 2 of the manual. https://fortamigo.com/data/manualy-k-pohonom/fortamigo.com-NICE-EPMOR.pdf There are three jumpers: J1, J2 and J3. Set them as follows:
- If the gate opening is wider than 4 m, remove jumper J1; if it is narrower, leave it in place.
- Set jumper J2 to the NC position: it should be on the top two pins, leaving the bottom pin free.
- Leave jumper J3 in place; this means the photocell test will be disabled.
- Connect the wiring as follows:
- Connect terminal 9 on the control unit to terminal 3 on the photocell.
- Connect terminal 8 on the control unit to terminal 4 on the photocell.
- Connect terminal 11 on the control unit to terminal 6 on the photocell.
- Connect terminal 9 on the control unit to terminal 5 on the photocell.
- Reconnect the operator to the power supply; it should now work.
Wiring multiple pairs of photocells
If you need to connect multiple pairs of photocells to a NICE Rox operator, they can share the power supply, but their safety circuits must be wired in series. This means closing the safety circuit between terminals 9 and 11 on the control unit by connecting terminal 9 on the control unit to terminal 4 on the first RX photocell, then terminal 5 on that photocell to terminal 4 on the second RX photocell, and finally terminal 5 on the second photocell to terminal 11 on the control unit.
If the beam between any pair is interrupted, the safety circuit will open, causing the gate to stop and begin opening.
Wiring photocells to protect the gate's retraction area
If for any reason you need to protect the area into which the gate retracts when using a NICE Rox operator, you can:
- either install an additional pair of photocells on the retraction side,
- or install one pair of photocells covering the entire gate travel (if the distance between the photocells allows this)
Then set DIP switch 6 on the control unit to ON. The gate will then stop if the photocell beam is interrupted, both while closing and while opening. If the photocell beam is interrupted while the gate is opening, the gate will fully open by itself as soon as the beam is clear again.
