Description of NICE CMA 2MT – 2 m mechanical safety edge
The mechanical safety edge is used to protect vehicles and people moving in close proximity to the gate’s path, and is primarily intended to protect children, animals, and visitors in public areas.
The pressure-sensitive edge consists of an aluminium profile, which is screwed to the surface, a hollow rubber profile, containing a tensioned steel cable and a switch, which is activated when the cable is pressed. This switch is connected to the safety input on the gate operator, which, when its state changes, immediately stops the movement and briefly reverses in the opposite direction.
You can think of the cable inside the rubber profile as a taut guitar string, fixed at one end and attached at the other to a lever-operated pull switch. Pressing the string pulls the switch and opens the circuit on the gate operator.
You’ve surely seen an action movie where a villain is walking through the woods, trips over a tripwire set by the hero, and sets off a detonator when he pulls it, sending him flying into the air. This pressure-sensitive obstacle sensor works on a similar principle.
Since the pressure-sensitive edge does not require a power supply, it can be used in combination with FT210 photocells (relay connection – universal) and FT210B (BlueBus connection), with the pressure-sensitive edge mounted on the moving gate leaf together with a battery-powered wireless photocell transmitter, which communicates wirelessly with the photocell receiver mounted on a post and connected to the operator by a cable.
The sensitivity of the pressure-sensitive edge is adjustable.
The operator can be connected to several safety edges to protect different areas of the installation under different movement scenarios.
The pressure-sensitive edge has an additional backup microswitch, which is activated if the cable tension is released.
The pressure-sensitive edge is 2m long, but it can be shortened to the required length by cutting the aluminium profile, trimming the rubber profile and shortening the wire cable.
Mounting options depend on the situation and type of gate, but the main options are
- mounting at the end of the leaf of a sliding gate to provide protection while closing
- mounting on the guide posts of the gate to prevent entrapment in the narrow space between the gate and the post
Installation must be vertical, with the lever switch positioned at the top.
