Pairing remotes with KEY gate operators
KEY brand remote controls are primarily distinguished by the colour of the remote's LED. If the LED on the remote lights up when you press any button:
- blue, it uses a rolling code, e.g. KEY Sub SUB44R,
- red, it uses a fixed code, e.g. KEY Sub SUB44,
- green, it uses a fixed code that can be copied from another remote, e.g. KEY Sub SUB44N.
The colour of the remote itself does not matter; they even have replaceable covers.
Pairing a KEY Sub remote with the receiver in the operator
In 95% of cases, you can pair the remote with the operator using this procedure:
- Press the pairing button for one second; theLED next to it will start flashing.
- Press and hold a button on the remote control for about 3 seconds.
- Wait for the LED on the receiver to stop flashing, then test the remote.
The key is to identify where the pairing button is located. There are basically three places to look for it:
- On the receiver plugged into the control unit
- Directly on the control unit
- On an external receiver connected to the control unit by wires.
Pairing button on the receiver plugged into the control unit
This is the case, for example, with CT-102, CT-202 and CT-14A control units.
The receiver is usually positioned at right angles to the control unit, either as a small circuit board or a grey box. Older versions of the units are more likely to have a circuit board, while newer ones are more likely to have a grey box.
The grey box is probably a RX4Y plug-in receiver, or a variation of it. The button is "cut out" on it, with the LED right next to it.
The small circuit board is probably a KEY RXI-23 (possibly an RXI-41, RXI-42, RXI-42R, etc.), or perhaps an older version. If it has one button, that is the pairing button, but it may have two buttons. They may be marked P and S; if so, the P button is the pairing button. If they are not labelled, the P button is probably the one that is not in a corner of the circuit board.
Pairing button directly on the control unit
For example, on KEY CT-10224 and CT-20224 control units, the combined menu-navigation and pairing button is located at the top right (it may be labelled DOWN/RADIO or with a minus sign). On this unit, hold the pairing button until "rad" appears on the display, then release it and press it again for one second. Next, hold down the remote button for 3 seconds, release it, wait seven seconds and test it.
On Viper garage door operators, the pairing button is marked S. Hold it down; when "0" appears on the display, press the remote button. When "0" disappears, release it—the remote has been saved.
Pairing button on an external receiver
You may have a device from a brand other than KEY, with a receiver wired to the control unit at inputs similar to those for a wired push button.
Try following the instructions for the KEY RXM-23 external receiver, or KEY RXME.
Instructions for KEY Sub SUB44N
Resetting the KEY Sub SUB44N remote
This procedure generates new fixed codes internally in the remote for each button, which means the remote will essentially stop working with all devices. Reset procedure:
- Press and hold the first and second buttons at the same time; the LED will flash slowly.
- Keep holding them; after about eight seconds, the LED will start flashing faster.
- Release the first button, then release the second button after a few seconds.
- Done.
Copying a code from one remote to another
This procedure only works if you have a new remote with a green LED to copy the code to, and an old remote with a red or green LED to copy the code from. Procedure:
- On the new remote, press the first button and then another button (one of them should be the button you want to copy the code to). So, if you want to copy the code for the:
- first button, press the first button and any other button
- second button, press the first and second buttons
- third button, press the first and third buttons
- fourth button, press the first and fourth buttons
- Hold both buttons; the LED will start flashing slowly.
- Release one button, keeping the button you want to copy the code to held down.
- On the old remote, press and hold the button you want to copy, then hold the remotes close together.
- When the LED on the new remote starts flashing quickly, release both buttons.
- Done—you have copied the code from one button on the old remote to one button on the new remote.
