Programming the functions of NICE Robus and NICE Run drives

Programmable functions of NICE Robus and Run operators

NICE Robus and Run operators have 8 functions that can be switched on/off and 8 functions that can be set to 8 possible values. Programming is done using three buttons—OPEN, STOP/SET, and CLOSE—and eight LEDs, L1 to L8. The factory settings are preset, so if you do not need to change anything, there is nothing to program. These functions are:

8 functions that can be switched on/off (level-one programming)

All these functions are disabled by default. On the control unit, you can tell whether a function is enabled by checking whether the corresponding LED, L1 to L8, is lit. Example: only automatic closing is enabled, so LED L1 on the control unit is lit continuously.

  • L1 - Automatic closing - enable this function if you want the gate to close automatically after the set time has elapsed (30 seconds by default).
  • L2 - Close after photocell activation - enable this function if you want the gate to close 5 seconds after a vehicle passes through the photocells. In combination with automatic closing, there are two possible behaviours:
    • Only Close after photocell activation enabled, automatic closing disabled: the gate always opens fully, even if you passed through it "a long time ago," and then closes after 5 seconds.
    • Both Close after photocell activation and automatic closing enabled: as soon as you enter the photocell beam, the gate stops (so it does not open fully). When you leave the beam (the car has passed), a 5-second countdown starts and the gate closes.
  • L3 - Always close - enable this function so that the gate receives a close command after a power outage. Otherwise, it would remain open when power is restored.
  • L4 - Standby mode - enable this function when operating on a backup battery or solar panel. After one minute, the control unit enters "sleep" mode and wakes only when it receives a movement command. Although this function reduces power consumption, the control unit may not behave exactly as expected with complex wiring (GSM controls, card readers, induction loops, timers, etc.). We therefore recommend leaving this function disabled unless you really need it.
  • L5 - Boost - when this function is activated, the operator runs at full power from startup, which can help eliminate false obstacle detections caused by snow, ice, and frost.
  • L6 - Pre-flashing - enable this function if you want the gate warning light to flash for 3 seconds before each movement, before the gate starts moving. Greater safety in exchange for a delay.
  • L7 - The wired CLOSE input acts as a partial-opening input - a volt-free contact on the wired CLOSE input sends the gate a close command. If you enable this function, you reconfigure the input so that a wired command can tell the operator to open the gate partially.
  • L8 - Slave control unit - enabled only when two opposing sliding gates are interconnected.

8 functions that can be set to 8 possible values (level-two programming)

  • L1 - Pause time: how long before the gate closes automatically (automatic closing must be enabled for this to work):
    • L1 - After 5 seconds
    • L2 - After 15 seconds
    • L3 - After 30 seconds - factory setting
    • L4 - After 45 seconds
    • L5 - After 60 seconds
    • L6 - After 80 seconds
    • L7 - After 120 seconds
    • L8 - After 180 seconds
  • L2 - Step-by-step mode: how the operator/gate behaves when the remote control button is pressed repeatedly (or when a command is repeatedly sent to the SbS wired input)
    • L1 - Open > Stop > Close > Stop
    • L2 - Open > Stop > Close > Open - factory setting
    • L3 - Open > Close > Open > Close
    • L4 - Condominium mode - the gate always completes the opening manoeuvre; during opening, it ignores further commands
    • L5 - Condominium mode with stop function - like L4 Condominium mode, but the gate can be stopped while opening by holding the button for at least two seconds
    • L6 - Step-by-step mode type 2 - sequence as in L2, but a full-opening command is sent by holding the button for at least 2 seconds; a shorter press triggers only partial opening
    • L7 - Hold-to-run - the gate moves only while the button is held down
    • L8 - During opening, the sequence is as in L2; during closing, the button must be held down, as in L7 Hold-to-run
  • L3 - Operator speed: how quickly the operator opens and closes the gate
    • L1 - Very slow (30%)
    • L2 - Slow (45%)
    • L3 - Medium (55%)
    • L4 - Fast (70%) - factory setting
    • L5 - Very fast (85%) - factory setting for NICE Robus RB500HS
    • L6 - Extremely fast (100%)
    • L7 - Opens as "L4 Fast" and closes as "L2 Slow"
    • L8 - Opens as "L6 Extremely fast" and closes as "L4 Fast"
  • L4 - OGI output behaviour: when and how the wired OGI (Open Gate Indicator) output operates. The output is 24 V DC, max. 4 W.
    • L1 - The output is open when the gate is closed and closed when the gate is open. While opening, it switches slowly and repeatedly; while closing, it switches quickly and repeatedly - factory setting
    • L2 - Closed only when the gate is fully closed; otherwise, off.
    • L3 - Closed only when the gate is fully open; otherwise, off.
    • L4 - Activated only by radio output no. 2, i.e. if your remote control is paired in Mode I, it switches on when you press the second button on the remote.
    • L5 - Activated only by radio output no. 3; see the previous point
    • L6 - Activated only by radio output no. 4; see the previous point
    • L7 - Activated when the number of movements exceeds the threshold for the maintenance warning; see "L7 Service reminder".
    • L8 - The output operates an electric lock; before opening begins, the control unit activates this output
  • L5 - Motor force: how strongly the operator pushes, or how sensitive it is to obstacles
    • L1 - Super-light gate
    • L2 - Very light gate
    • L3 - Light gate
    • L4 - Average-weight gate
    • L5 - Moderately heavy gate - factory setting
    • L6 - Heavy gate
    • L7 - Very heavy gate
    • L8 - Super-heavy gate
  • L6 - Partial opening distance: pedestrian access - the distance the operator opens the gate when given a partial-opening command
    • L1 - Distance: 0.5 metres
    • L2 - Distance: 1 metre - factory setting
    • L3 - Length 1.5 metres
    • L4 - Length 2 metres
    • L5 - Length 2.5 metres
    • L6 - Length 3 metres
    • L7 - Length 3.5 metres
    • L8 - Length 4 metres
  • L7 - Service reminder: after how many manoeuvres the drive will signal that it would be a good idea to service the gate/drive. This is for information only.
    • L1 - Automatic - the drive calculates the number of manoeuvres itself according to their difficulty - from the factory
    • L2 - 1,000 manoeuvres
    • L3 - 2,000 manoeuvres
    • L4 - 4,000 manoeuvres
    • L5 - 7,000 manoeuvres
    • L6 - 10,000 manoeuvres
    • L7 - 15,000 manoeuvres
    • L8 - 20,000 manoeuvres
  • L8 - List of the last manoeuvres and their errors: Strictly speaking, this is not programming, as it is used to find out what types of errors the drive recorded during the last eight manoeuvres - it even follows a different procedure.

Programming NICE Robus and Run drives

Of course, it depends on whether you want to program a level-one function (a function that can only be switched on or off) or a level-two function (a function that can be set to one of eight parameters).

The procedure starts the same way for both levels, which may give the impression that level two sets the values of the level-one functions. That is not the case. For both methods, you need to think of the functions (LEDs L1 to L8) as eight level-one functions and another eight level-two functions.

Procedure for programming a level-one function (a function that can only be switched on or off)

  1. Select the function you want to switch on or off. For example, let's switch on function L6 - Pre-flashing.
  2. Press and hold the STOP/SET button. When LED L1 starts flashing, release the button.
  3. Note: You have 10 seconds for each subsequent button press. If you do not press anything within 10 seconds, programming will end automatically.
  4. Use the OPEN (up arrow) and CLOSE (down arrow) buttons to move the flashing LED up or down until it reaches the LED for the function you want to switch on or off. So, for L6 - pre-flashing, press the CLOSE button 5 times until the flashing LED moves to position L6.
  5. Now press the STOP/SET button once without holding it; the LED will change its flashing frequency.
  6. Wait 10 seconds and you're done. If you were switching the function on, the corresponding LED will stay lit; if you were switching it off, the corresponding LED will go out.

Procedure for programming a level-two function (a function that can be set to one of eight parameters)

  1. Select the function you want to reprogram and the value you want to set. For example, let's change L6 - Partial opening distance from the preset value L2 - Length 1 m to L5 - Length 2.5 m.
  2. Press and hold the STOP/SET button. When LED L1 starts flashing, release the button.
  3. Note: You have 10 seconds for each subsequent button press. If you do not press anything within 10 seconds, programming will end automatically.
  4. Use the OPEN (up arrow) and CLOSE (down arrow) buttons to move the flashing LED up or down until it reaches the LED for the function whose value you want to change. So, for L6 - Partial opening distance press the CLOSE button 5 times until the flashing LED moves to position L6.
  5. Now press the STOP/SET button and keep holding it, until one of the LEDs lights up (the currently set value). For the Partial opening distance function, the factory-set value L2 - Length 1 m will light up.
  6. Keep holding the STOP/SET button and repeatedly press OPEN (up arrow) or CLOSE (down arrow) to move the lit LED to the value you want to set. In our example, you want to move the LED from position L2 - Length 1 m to L5 - Length 2.5 m, so press the CLOSE button three times.
  7. Release the STOP/SET button. The LED whose value you changed will flash briefly (for 10 seconds), then stop flashing. In our example, LED L6 will flash briefly and then stop flashing.
  8. Done! You have successfully changed the value of a level-two function.

If that doesn't make sense, don't worry - we also have step-by-step instructions for the most commonly programmed functions :)

Step-by-step instructions (examples):

Step-by-step instructions for functions that can be switched on or off (level-one programming)

Enabling automatic closing

Assumption: LED L1 is off, meaning automatic closing is disabled.

  1. Press and hold the STOP/SET button. When LED L1 starts flashing, release the button.
  2. Within 10 seconds, press the STOP/SET button once. LED L1 will then change its flashing frequency.
  3. Wait for LED L1 to stop flashing and stay lit.

Disabling automatic closing

Assumption: LED L1 is continuously lit, meaning automatic closing is enabled.

  1. Press and hold the STOP/SET button. When LED L1 starts flashing, release the button.
  2. Within 10 seconds, press the STOP/SET button once. LED L1 will then change its flashing frequency.
  3. Wait for LED L1 to stop flashing and remain off.
